On April 16 CL performed at Coachella as part of 88rising’s “Heads in the Clouds Forever” concert. After performing some of her biggest hits such as “Hello Bitches” and “SPICY, Cl was joined on stage by her 2NE1 teammates Park Bom, Sandara Park, and Minzy, who surprised the crowd with a surprise performance of their classic blockbuster hit “I AM THE BEST.”
The legendary quartet reunited during CL’s 88rising concert. BIBI, NIKI, Jackson Wang, Rich Brien, and others were all part of the “Head in the Clouds Forever” extravaganza, but 2NE1’s involvement was unannounced.
Following the reunion, 2NE1 became a hot topic online as fans noted the group’s “MAMA 2015” appearance. During the 2015 MAMA Awards, only CL was on stage, although the rest of 2NE1 performed their singles “Fire” and “I Am The Best.” While 2NE1 has reunited for anniversaries and special occasions, the Coachella 2022 reunion marks the group’s first live performance since 2015.
2NE1 debuted in 2009 and is recognized with introducing K-pop to the worldwide scale. They disband in the year 2016 and released a final single in 2017. In April of that year, a month before 2NE1’s contract with YG expired, the label confirmed the departure of former member Gong Minzy. YG stated at the time that the group would continue with the remaining three members.
YG also expressed gratitude to 2NE1’s supporters and explained the group’s decision to breakup in the November statement. The press originally reported on the group in late 2008, when rumours circulated that
YG was establishing a female Big Bang called Sista. Yang Hyun Suk, YG Entertainment’s President, responded that the name had yet to be picked. The “Female Big Bang” was announced in January 2009 with three members: CL, Minzy, and Bom.
Later that month, YG announced Sandara Park as the group’s newest member. YG Entertainment finally confirmed that the group would have four members and debut in May 2009. The firm announced that the trio had trained for 4 years and that Teddy Park will produce their debut album.
Following the discovery of a singer with the same name, the group was renamed “2NE1”, which stands for “New Evolution of the 21st Century” (NE standing for “New Evolution” and “21st Century”).
The group has gained considerable online popularity, with the song topping M.Net’s online chart and the group’s name becoming a hot search phrase. Additionally, the group received three Cy world Digital Music Accolades, with “Lollipop” and “Fire” winning “Song of the Month”
awards and the group taking home “Rookie of the Month” honors for May 2009. They won their first Mutizen award on June 14, 2009, during their fourth stage performance on SBS Inkigayo (Popular Song). On June 21, 2009, they earned their second Mutizen award on SBS Inkigayo (Popular Song).
Along with their award wins, 2NE1 secured an agreement with Fila to be the new faces of their commercial campaign two days after winning the Mutizen award. It was announced that 2NE1 would relocate to the United States to work on their album, following Interscope Records chairman Jimmy Iovine’s interest in the group; however, the group has no plans to make their North American debut.
Coming back to their present Coachella performance indeed, the set was electrifying enough that Dara lost a shoe during the performance after releasing a strong kick.
The group’s leader CL looks to be responsible for this performance, as he brought four people onto the same platform as a result of the 88rising relationship with Coachella. When people across social media observe this unexpected reunion, they are overcome with emotion.
