The DMK general secretary, Duraimurugan, suspended five DMK executives from the Theni, Tirupur, and Nilgiri districts for allegedly acting against the party’s coalition understanding. In the recently concluded urban local body election, the five DMK executives contested as independent candidates.
The seats that they have contested were given by the DMK to coalition partners. Recently, Tamil Nadu’s chief minister, MK Stalin, asked the functionaries of the party who had won seats that were assigned to coalition partners to resign from the position.
According to India Today, MK Stalin has also asked party functionaries to resign and offer their won seats to the coalition party as promised.
A sweeping victory for DMK
The DMK recently had a sweeping victory in the Tamil Nadu urban local body polls, which were held on February 19 and the results were announced on February 22. The party won a margin of more than two-thirds of the seats contested.
In the Chennai Corporation alone, the CM MK Stalin-led DMK won 153 of 200 wards. Having secured an independent majority, the party workers celebrated the victory all around the state by bursting firecrackers, distributing sweets and lauding MK Stalin for his leadership.
Even after Theni being the hometown of AIADMK coordinator O Panneer Selvam and the AIADMK having a stronghold in it, it is to be noted that the DMK party had a massive win in the Theni district. DMK won 946 wards in corporations out of 1373 seats, 2,360 seats in municipalities out of 3842 seats, and 4388 in town panchayats out of 7605 seats, pushing all other parties to the back.
The DMK alliance parties had also secured reasonable seats, leaving the opponent AIADMK in a distant second place. At the same time, notably, the Bharatiya Janata Party, contested alone in the polls, won 22 seats in municipal corporations, 56 in municipalities and 230 in town panchayats.
