Spending several years in a pandemic-uncertain world has definitely taken a toll on the fashion sense collectively, and it has been justified. But with the onset of 2024, there is the hope of reviving everything right in fashion! Fashion moves at the speed of light, and most trends that we loved in 2022 have already started to extinguish their spark.
It’s time to check out what to NOT carry along with you into 2024.
1. Cottagecore clogs:
The clogs had a relatively short life span in fashion and were meant to die out soon. What you could use instead are the timeless ballet flats. They are sophisticated and comfortable and go with everything you wear, be it a pretty one-piece dress, ethnic, or even your denim. Clogs had their own limelight for a brief time as a fashion statement that does not torture your feet, but they have definitely started being annoying to the eyes now.
2. Unflattering Y2K trends:
Y2K Fashion has been very upbeat and punky to the extent that it has become extensively familiar and easy. The usual “Pinterest board style” clothing has become too handy for everyone to call it fashion. Y2K fashion has been kind to us, but some unflattering trends like low-waist denim and sunnies have not been very body-type-friendly to everyone, and 2024 is going to be a body-positive year for everyone. Wearing something that flatters your body is important, and that is what we will be going for!
“I’ve weirdly never been one for a skirt, midi, mini or maxi, probably because they all remind me a little too much of my frumpy high school uniform (there were also puffed sleeves and shoulder pads… shiver), but I’m already sensing 2022 to be the year of the free leg. Goodbye tracksuits and hello mini skirts. I recently bought myself a tweed, vintage Chanel mini, and have just invested in another from New Zealand brand Wynn Hamlyn; I’m sure before the year is up I’ll find another. I already have my eye on this pleated Dion Lee number. Three’s a trend!” —Francesca Wallace, director of digital strategy Vogue
3. Peplum:
Peplum has always been an attempt at recreating the hourglass figure. It made its comeback in 2010 and was boldly welcomed. But 2024 is a year for more body-flattering trends than peplum.
4. Oversized everything:
No scientific explanation was ever provided why the pandemic gave rise to the oversized trend. But it is an overused and very low effort to be considered fashionable. Streetwear fashion goes beyond just oversized; it is high time we explore that. Time to ditch oversized everything and find your proper fit to embrace those curves best.
“A knitwear set is something that has become a fashionable take on glam leisure,” says Brooklyn-based fashion stylist and TV expert Denise Caldwell. But it’s time we take a break from being comfy and step out to experiment and better accept our body’s shape.
Can you tell I’m sick to death of hiding away in every sense of the phrase?- Gladys Lai, Content editor, Vogue
5. Stilettos:
What in the evil mind would stilettos serve the purpose? The only purpose served is torture to feet, and we put a full stop to it in 2022 itself. Alternatively, different kinds of sneakers are acceptably fashionable for every type of dress. Be it office wear, party wear, or casual. Hope on the trend with trusted few sneakers and experiment with it. It could be solid colors or even color-blocked. Try not to go with printed sneakers.
With that, we leave behind “too-comfy”, “too insufferable” and “too unkind to body shapes” back in 2022 and embrace the actual body-positive trends in 2024.
