Plastics are polymers, and they have a long, repeating chain of molecules.

By secreting an enzyme that “eats” the chemical bonds in the chain, the molecules break down into minor components and facilitate their recycling.

Ideonella sakaiensis breaks polyethylene terephthalate down to functional components in a matter of days rather than hundreds of years.

They discovered it accidentally from the sample taken from sediment outside a plastic bottle recycling factory in Sakai, Japan.
