‘Potato chips’ as a promotional trick? Did we hear that right? Yes, Google has brought back its original chips snack in Japan as part of its odd marketing ploy. Alphabet Inc.’s Google is offering flavored potato chips branded with the name Google to promote the upcoming smartphone release under the Pixel series.
Google the Tech Giant in California
The California-based company has been in the business of designing smartphones for over a decade but has not been able to make a significant mark in the industry. Dating back to Nexus handsets until Pixel (launched in 2016), they have never been able to break out of the niche status and seem to be on the losing end in this overly competitive market with steady competition from Apple, Samsung, and OnePlus along with other major brands.
The company had been striving for a long time to become a relevant player in the business using various tricks and methods. They created Nexus smartphones in collaboration with well-known phone manufacturers. To compete with Apple Inc., They assumed responsibility for the manufacture and distribution of mobile devices as well as full design control. The company planned to compete with Apple, whose smartphones are also run by its own A-series CPUs, with its bespoke chips. In 2020, The company stopped using Qualcomm CPUs in its smartphones, much like Apple stopped using Intel in its laptops. However, all the efforts seem to be going down the drain even after sponsoring the NBA playoffs.
During these testing times, ‘potato chips’ have presented themselves as a potential savior of Google. The first version of this campaign, which is to use potato chips as a means to publicize was used for the Tensor Processor. The Tensor Processor is an innovative, one-of-a-kind product made within a timeframe of four years. The trick of using snacks as a promotion saw highly favorable results and was received with much love and adornment. Considering the initial success, 2000 will get a chance to take one bag home via lottery.

There would be a possibility of winning one out of 4 flavors, Hazel Onion, Salty Lemon, Snow Cheese, or Obsidian Pepper reflecting the 4 colors of the Pixel 7 devices. The aim would be to show the potential of the most popular handset powered by the second generation of Tensor chips through flagship android handsets. Except for the United States, Japan has been a hotspot for Pixel devices thus making Google launch their ‘Original Chips.’ The trick seems to be working well with the Japanese market and an air of anticipation has started engulfing the other countries with a longing for a fruitful result.
