LaQuan Smith launches his spring/summer 2024 collection at New York fashion week, inspired by “wind, air, and movement”.
The Queens-based designer showcased his newest collection this Monday on the USS Intrepid aircraft carrier docked on the Hudson River.
A brilliant, creative concept, Smith said he was inspired by his recent trip to Morocco and had an overflow of ideas that he then applied to his sketches on returning to New York.
Smith was reportedly quoted as sharing the backstory of his inspiration for the collection, “My Spring/Summer 2024 collection is about wind, air, and movement.” I took a trip this summer to Morocco and was completely inspired by the weather and the rich colors in the spice market. The collection also has many elements of eroticism—poetic and romantic.
True to his words, the collection showcased flowy, elegant chiffon scarves wrapped around models’ necks and bejeweled lace, mini skirts, and body-baring, asymmetrical silhouettes.
LaQuan Smith wants Freedom
Smith wanted the collection to be a celebration of freedom and fluidity and put the spotlight on the female form and sensuality. This season was the most challenging for him, both creatively speaking and as a designer.
With music from Diplo and styling from Patti Wilson, the show also had supermodels like Winnie Harlow and Cindy Bruna walking the ramp.
His romantic silhouettes were beautifully juxtaposed with utilitarian elements like low-rise, cellophane cargo pants, bias-cut jersey dresses, and safari-style jackets.
Frida Aasen, the Norwegian supermodel, was clad in a stunning bralette shaped like silver wings, paired with a silver waist sash over a hugging black skirt and black wrap-around heels.
Smith also had Swedish model, Elsa Hosk, open the show for him in all pink. She wore a collared, full-sleeve bodysuit with a sporty, mini skirt and silver chunky hoops.
This is not the first time Smith has had the fashion world turning its heads. Not very long ago, Beyoncé wore a black cut-out, body-hugging dress for a campaign with Tiffany & Co.
Since his debut in 2013, Smith has proven himself to be a skilled designer and carved a place for himself in the fashion industry.
