People who reside in public housing are usually from low-income groups. Children in public housing are likely to be exposed to the consumption of alcohol.
Consumption of alcohol at a very early age can cause adverse effects. In particular, children, when exposed to alcohol, will be active drinkers. This is mainly observed in public housing areas where children are exposed to alcohol.
Despite the fact that alcohol is injurious to health, children consuming alcohol can adversely affect their future.
In order to take an initiative to prevent children in public housing from consuming alcohol, the U.S. government generated a new scheme called “housing mobility”. This scheme provides vouchers to children in public housing to move to better neighborhoods.
This scheme is widely welcomed by the local public housing residents. Vouchers provided in the scheme have created a demand for housing mobility.
Research has been undertaken to find out the effectiveness of the scheme. The research mainly focused on three groups: a low-poverty neighborhood, a group who received housing counseling, and the ones who received vouchers.
Children who moved to a new neighborhood were likely to avoid consuming alcohol. Children in public housing, on the other hand, continued to consume alcohol.
However, youth in the control groups were less likely to benefit from the program. Reports say that there was no difference between vouchers and social emotional groups. Their drinking patterns remained the same.
The public housing support was mainly provided in areas like Boston, Baltimore, Chicago, Los Angeles, and New York City.
The voucher program has its own pros and cons. One such thing is observed as drinking patterns among mothers. The root cause of having a child with a learning disability most likely significantly reduced drinking pattern.
In contrast, there was an increase in the drinking pattern among mothers who didn’t have a child with a learning issue.
Children are the future of a nation. So, it is the nation’s responsibility to ensure children are guided in the right direction. Schools should implement a program to create awareness about drug abuse.
