Google has been conducting tests related to artificial intelligence for quite some time now. They have been researching to improve user accessibility of AI, advance different fields and products, and create new domains using the available AI technology.
They hope to provide more sustainable and value-adding benefits for both businesses and customers through this tech.
Google’s plan to promote sustainability
Earlier this year, Google was asked to use its influence on the world to fight climate change. In response to this, Google developed an AI-based technology through which they can time traffic lights.
This latest technology will help calculate the traffic conditions and timing at a four-way intersection and optimize it so that vehicles spend less time waiting at red signals.
Google has been able to decrease fuel usage and traffic delays in Israel through this method. The Alphabet-owned company has stated that it has reduced fuel consumption and delay time at the road intersections by up to 20%.
The Chief Sustainability Officer of Google, Kate Brandt, noted that they are planning on conducting these tests in Rio De Janeiro and other cities worldwide because of the positive response received.
Implementation of AI tech in India
Air Pollution has been one of the biggest environmental issues plaguing our nation for the past few decades. Increasing urbanization and industrialization are the prime reasons for the increase in pollution.
Haryana, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Maharashtra are a few of the states that contribute to air pollution the most in India.
It was found that 50% of deaths in Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Bihar, West Bengal, and Rajasthan are caused due to air pollution, according to the Lancet Planetary Health December 22, 2020.
If such traffic control measures are implemented in India using AI, especially in metropolitan cities, it can reduce pollution to a certain extent.
It can also save people a lot of their time and energy, which can be put into more productive activities beneficial for them and maybe even the country.
Even though the thought of artificial intelligence improving our traffic situation may sound absurd to most people, its benefits outweigh the risks making it perfect for implementation in our country.
New Plans on Google’s radar
Google has always promoted sustainability, and it has been one of its goals for the past two decades. It was one of the first companies to become carbon neutral and also happens to be the largest corporate purchaser of renewable energy.
In addition to its current project, i.e., Traffic Timing, Google is updating Maps, Search, and its other products to help consumers save energy and decrease pollution.
They aim to make Google Maps more eco-friendly by showing users routes that would involve fewer carbon emissions while taking the time factor into account.
