A Bihar woman belonging to the Women Development Corporation accuses a student of making a request at an event. She stated, “Now you will ask for sanitary napkins and what’s next, condoms?Â
Harjot Kaur, managing director of Bihar Women’s Development Corporation, reported about a small school girl regarding the request set out in an event. She added that relying on the government for subsidies is not a good idea. Â
The small girl’s plea and the woman’s response
A small girl in the school asked to provide free sanitary napkins as an addition to the freebies given by the government. The girl also added that political parties promise to do many things, but when given power, they neglect the promises.
In response, the woman stated that the government cannot always provide things for free. Moreover, asking for free sanitary napkins will then lead to demand for free condoms.
Relying on the government is not a good act, said the woman, who also added that she has spoken up for various issues and been working for various measures, and this controversy on napkins can defame her name.
Is it a big deal to provide free sanitary napkins?
The government provides so many subsidies to people, like rice, cereals, oil, sugar, etc. Isn’t a napkin an essential one?
Many countries are providing napkins at no cost to the public. Considering menstrual hygiene, the government should take the initiative to make it available at no cost.
Though India is a developing country, women in many regions are still accustomed to using wet clothes during their menstrual cycle. Not because they are not aware, but because of the fact, they couldn’t afford it.
Sanitary napkins are as essential as any basic need. And the government must make the sanitary napkins available at no cost.
