GREIF CONTINUES IN GAMBIA AS CHILDREN LOST THEIR LIVES DUE TO THE INTAKE OF COUGH SYRUPS.
The President of Gambia reported that 70 children have died due to acute kidney injury, caused by cough syrups which are manufactured and sold in India. On investigation, it was found that the production of these syrups was by a New Delhi-based Maiden Pharmaceuticals ltd, which has suspended the manufacturing since this news broke.
In an emergency cabinet meeting held on Thursday, the President of Gambia, Adama Barrow discussed the current situation. Indonesia on Saturday banned some specific ingredients in cough syrups which became the cause of death.
The WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION released a statement that ‘it has found unaccepted levels of the ingredients which can be toxic in four maiden products.’
India also took the matter seriously and has started investigating, The Drug Controller of India has asked WHO to provide details of the symptoms, allergies if any, signs, and illnesses found in the children upon consumption of these syrups. World Health Organization has shared the details of the symptoms with the DGCI, on receiving it, the Union Ministers along with other expert members came forward to determine and analyze the cause of the death of children, to which they stated, that the information shared by the organization was inadequate to conclude a decision.
External Affairs Ministers had a telephone conversation with the Foreign Minister of Gambia to discuss the issue. He shared the conversation through his Twitter which said “In a telecon with Gambian FM Dr Mamadou Tangara conveyed our deepest condolences on the deaths of young children recently. Underlined that matter is being seriously investigated by appropriate authorities. We agreed to remain in touch.”
COUGH SYRUP NAMES TO LOOK OUT FOR.
WHO mentioned that it has informed Central Drug Standard Control Organization (CDSCO), that they were assisting the Gambia Government, where many children have lost lives and the medicines which caused the death were (Promethazine Oral Solution BP, KOFEXNALIN Baby Cough Syrup, MaKOFF Baby Cough Syrup and MaGrip n Cold Syrup).
Food and Drug Regulator BPOM stated that they are investigating the possibility of the ingredients diethylene glycol and ethylene glycol might have contaminated the materials which are used as solvents. His statement stated that BPOM has set up a standard, that at the time of registration all syrups made for kids and adults shouldn’t be allowed to use these two ingredients.
The four syrups mentioned linked to the death of the children were not registered in Indonesia or any other maiden countries.
Meanwhile, ABU DHABI issues a warning to its people to refrain from the use of these syrups, and if anyone has consumed these, they should seek immediate medical help in case any side effects are observed.
