Italy today, on October 22 gets its first-female Prime Minister in the form of Giorgia Meloni. The sworn in ceremony of the former journalist and Italian Prime Minister took place along with the oath taking ceremony of her cabinet ministers in presence of President Segio Mattarella.
The far-right leader and head of the Brothers of Italy party will now face confidence votes in both houses of the parliament, next week. Antonio Tajani and Matteo Salvini are chosen as Deputy-Prime Ministers. In the year 2008, the right-wing populist scripted history by being the youngest minister to hold a portfolio.
Meloni’s party won the elections with a majority in coalition with Salvini’s far-right League and Silvio Berlusconi’s Forza Italia and gave nine Cabinet posts to the members of her party. There are a total of twenty-four ministers in Meloni’s cabinet among which are 5 technocrats, who do not belong to any political party. There are 6 women ministers in the cabinet led by Italy’s first female premier.

Motive of Italian coalition
The primary priority of the alliance is to abate the rising birth rate of the Western European state as well as to conserve the traditional family.

History might have been created in Italy today, but will Meloni be able to match expectations of the Italian population? Tons of challenges such as the emerging economy (Inflation & cost of living), energy crisis, recovery fund, and budget law are ahead of the coalition.
Meloni shows herself as a conservative who opposes the abortion law, and same-sex parenting. In her view, a family requires to be led by a man and a female. The newly sworn Prime Minister stands in support of naval blockade to halt immigration and NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organisation), and opposes the Russia-Ukraine war, and pledged to provide arms support to the war-torn European nation.
In 2018, she openly criticised The Walt Disney Company for showing a gay couple in Frozen II, writing, “Enough! We are sick of it. Take your hands off children”.
Coalition
The question is will this coalition collide or stand with each other fulfilling their vision. PM Meloni is clearly against the Russian military’s invasion of Ukraine, but Berlusconi recently shared the news informing that he exchanged gifts and sweet letters with the Russian President Vladimir Putin. Not only this, but Berlusconi also blamed Ukraine for the war which has been going on since February 24. There is indeed a difference in opinions, now it is to see how this coalition comes over it.
Meloni said that her cabinet is all set to start the work, noting, “We are announcing that we are ready because we want to proceed as quickly as possible”, adding, “I swear to be faithful to the republic”.
The Italian administration led by a 45-year-old female leader put back the national unity government of Mario Draghi.
Several world leaders congratulated Meloni on this big win. Prime Minister of Hungary, Orban Viktor, wrote on twitter, “Congratulations Giorgia Meloni, on the formation of your government! Big day for the European right!”.
President of the European Commission, Ursula Von der leyen, tweeted, “Congratulations Giorgia Meloni on her appointment as Italian Prime Minister, the first woman to hold the post. I count on and look forward to constructive cooperation with the new government on the challenges we face together”.
Meanwhile, the leader of the war-torn country, Volodymyr Zelensky, wishing Meloni stated, “My congratulations to the 1st female Prime Minister of Italy. I wish the new government to successfully respond to all the challenges of today. I look forward to continued fruitful cooperation to ensure peace and prosperity in Ukraine, Italy and the world”.
