The European football association championship league reached its conclusion of the group stage this week. Eleven teams have already booked their place in the knockout stages, including Chelsea, Manchester City, Liverpool and Manchester United, with a further five spots up for grabs in the last round of fixtures this week.
A draw to determine the game of 16 ties will be made, scheduled to happen in next year, 2022, in February and March. The remaining 16 teams will split into seeded and non-seeded sides ahead of the two-legged fixtures.
City, Liverpool and United have qualified as group winners, and they will be seeded at home for the second leg in the next round, while Chelsea requires one win against Zenit St Petersburg to reserve a top spot in their group.
All you need to know about the UEF Association
The Union of European Football Association (UEFA) Champions League or the UCL is a football competition organized annually by the UEFA. It is contested by the top-division European Clubs, which decides the competition winners through a round-robin group stage, qualifying which gives entry into the double legged knockout format and single-leg final.Â
The UCL is one of the most estimable football tournaments globally and the most reputable and distinguished European football played by the national league champions.Â
It was first introduced in 1955 and was commonly known as the European Club, which held basic straight knockout tournaments where only the champions of Europe’s domestic leagues were eligible to participate.
The present format of the league offers the teams a clear preliminary round that starts in June, followed by three qualifying rounds and a playoff round all played on two legs. The surviving team enters the group stage and joins the other 26 teams qualified earlier in advance.Â
The eight group winners and eight runners-up proceed to the knockout phase, culminating with the final match in late May or early June. The winner of the Champions League qualifies for the following year’s Champions League, the UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup.
Champions League Scenarios
With five knockout round berths still up for grabs and Europa League playoff spots at stake between the teams, it is sure going to be a fun two-day group stage finale in the UEFA Championship.
the plan starts with the action on Tuesday, which would determine:
- A spot in the knockout rounds in Group B.
- The highest place in Group D is between Real Madrid and Inter Milan.
- The third-position teams in Group A and Group B will be granted Europa League playoff tickets.
If in any of the groups, two or more teams are even on points, the first tiebreakers are:
- Points in matches among tied teams.
- Goal difference in games among tied teams.
- Goals scored in games among tied teams.Â
Group A’s winner was Manchester City, followed by Paris-saint Germain runner up. In the Europa League Playoff, the third-place oscillates between RB Leipzig or Club Brugge. At the end of the match, the match points determined the results, with Leipzig clinching the third playoff berth based on a goal difference of 6-2 in the two games against Bruges.
Group B’s winner was Liverpool followed by the runner-up’s Porto, Milan and Atletico Madrid. The three teams presented a worth watching battle to occupy a spot in the knockout rounds. Porto started with a one-point lead on the other too and faced the very enthusiastic and motivated Atletico in the group finale.
A tiebreaker comes into play for second place only when Milan and Atletico Madrid teams win and reach seven points each. Since the head-to-head results would see them stuck on points, goal difference and goals scored, the fourth tiebreaker would be essential: overall goal difference in the group.
However, the third-place might be seen as a nice consolation for one of the three teams who would not be able to grab for themselves a seat. The Europa League Playoff would welcome an unwelcome distraction from the hunt for the title in the respective domestic leagues.Â
The tiebreaker scenario looks somewhat like Milan and Atletico’s chase, both of whom could lose or tie and might drop down to the bottom two. The only potential tiebreaker scenario is if Porto loses and AC Milan draws. That would leave both the teams on five points, and Porto would finish ahead of AC Milan on the first tiebreaker (points in matches between the groups, 4-1).
In Group C, Ajax won the position already with Sporting CP as the runners-up. No battle, just the winning, which would lead to a more considerable sum of winning money.Â
Group D winner was Real Madrid. The first place is yet to be decided in the head-to-head match. Real Madrid has two results available (win or draw), while Inter Milan has to win to finish in the top spot. FC Sheriff Tiraspol.
The Moldovans’ European adventure continues in the Europa League playoff. And that’s despite losing three straight group-stage matches after sensationally winning its first two.
The championship would be fiery and bring out sizzling results. The finals are much awaited.
