Afghanistan has an increasing number of Pneumonia cases due to the beginning of the cold climate amongst other humane crises as the Taliban overtook them last year.
What is Pneumonia
Pneumonia is an infection that affects the lungs of an individual. The virus that causes the disease affects the respiratory organs such as influenza virus, rhinovirus, and respiratory syncytial virus which effects commonly in kids. These viruses attack the lungs causing the air sacs to inflame and fill up with pus or fluid. Children and elderly people are most prone to this disease and can be fatal to them.
Symptoms and Treatment of Pneumonia
Pneumonia can show up as coughing and chest pain initially, which may resolve in itself in certain healthy individuals who have been vaccinated. If the infection prolongs high fever, heart rate, chills, and sweat start to set off which may lead to wheezing or shortness of breath and dehydration. These diseases need medical intervention and treatment by antibiotics and penicillin and in some cases, oral therapy is been IV fluids are administered.
Afghanistan’s Pneumonia situation
Afghanistan has marked an increase of 30-50 cases every day as per the records in the Hospital in Kabul. The Ministry of Public Health in Afghanistan has recorded 9.6 lakh pneumonia cases in 11 months. This is said to be the consequence of poor sanitary and hygiene practices among the citizen, air pollution to top it, and extreme weather. The common people in Afghanistan are deprived of basic stuff to protect them from the harsh weather.
Their helpless situation makes their kids the first victim and they are mostly taken to treatment in critical stages which makes the disease resistant to antibiotics and the aftercare of patients at home is wretched making their entire life pathetic.
Other Health Crisis in Afghanistan
Pneumonia is not the only health condition in Afghanistan. The inmates have been suffering from Acute Watery Diarrhea which has caused 15 death in 19050 cases, and other outbreaks such as measles, dengue fever, and COVID 19 as stated by WHO.Â
