- India gives China’s women’s Hockey team a tough fight in Asia Cup 2022.
- India wins a bronze medal, but Japan gets the ultimate victory in Asia Cup 2022.
The women hockey team of India came with marvellous victory as they managed to beat China in Hockey Women’s Asia Cup 2022, held in Oman. Savita Punia led the team, and they returned home with a bronze medal after winning the former champion, China.
Sharmila Devi and Gurjit Kaur were the match stars who helped India win against China in Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex in Muscat. Gurjit has already made her mark in the Tokyo Olympics as the hockey team had reached the semifinal, and she had played a key role.
However, Japan won the title of the ultimate winner after beating Korea 4-2 in the summit clash.
India and China stood head-to-head in the competition. Even though they managed to thrash Malaysia in their opener successfully, India suffered a defeat against Asian Games Champion Japan before beating Singapore to qualify for the semifinals.
Towards the end of the match, China put the pressure to secure three consecutive penalty corners with two minutes left in the clock. They lacked in the final execution, and performance was inconsistent. Lack of practice due to the Covid19 pandemic led to the inability to bag the winning title in the match.
The semifinals performance did not match up to the overall team’s rigour. Hence, India was defeated by 2-3 by Korea.
