A 4.1 magnitude earthquake struck Uttarkashi, Uttarakhand, about 5:30 a.m.
The quake happened 39 kilometers east of Uttarkashi, in the Tehri Garhwal region, at 5.03 a.m., as per the National Centre for Seismology.
With a depth of 28 kilometers, the quake’s epicenter was located in latitude 30.72 degrees and longitude 78.85 degrees.Ā
Fortunately, there was no damage or loss of life; however, the measured earthquake was strong enough for everyone to feel, as per the Modified Mercalli Intensity Scale. This is the second earthquake to strike Uttarkashi in the last week.
The previous one occurred around 3.15 a.m. on Saturday, February 5, 2022. It was buried 10 kilometers beneath the earth’s surface. The epicenter of the earthquake was detected 58 kilometers northwest of Uttarkashi.
In addition, on Thursday, when a 5.7 magnitude earthquake struck the Afghanistan-Tajikistan border region, vibrations of 3.8 magnitudes were felt in Jammu and Kashmir, as per the Ritcher scale. The quake struck at 9.45 a.m. IST, at a depth of 181 kilometers.Ā
Pithoragarh in the same state reported a magnitude of 4.1 on the Richter scale in the last week of December 2021, just before Uttarkashi’s first earthquake in February.
According to District Disaster Management Officer Bhupendra Mahar, the earthquake struck around 12:40 a.m. in Askot, with its epicenter at a depth of 10 kilometers.
“No damage has been reported because the tremor was of low intensity,”
