Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla has declared that his electric vehicle and battery enterprise will swiftly enter the India market, after “Make in India” appeal of PM Modi.
During the highly significant three-day state visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the United States, he met the Tesla CEO and Twitter owner, Elon Musk on Tuesday. Musk expressed his admiration for Modi stating “I am a supporter of Modi” when speaking to the press after their encounter.
PM Modi has previously met Musk during a visit to the Tesla Motors factory in 2015 in California. Musk expressed his enthusiasm post a productive meeting with the Prime Minister, emphasizing their previous interaction when the PM visited Tesla Motors factory few years ago.
Elon Musk conveyed his tremendous excitement for the future of India, highlighting that he believes that India holds greater potential than any other large nation across the world.
In conversations with reporters following Musk’s meeting with PM Modi, he revealed that, the Prime Minister genuinely cares about India as he urges them to make substantial investments in the country. This also marked a change in the stance of Musk as he had declined to consider manufacturing in India previously unless the country reduced tariffs on imported Teslas for domestic sales.
Tesla’s primary Gigafactory in Asia presently is operating in Shanghai and is standing as the largest automobile production facility of the company outside the United States. This factory, notably contributed to more than half of the worldwide deliveries of Tesla in 2022.
In an event last month, Elon Musk mentioned that the company would probably finalize a site for a new Tesla factory by the end of 2024, with India being a compelling prospect among the options under consideration.
Both India and China have been actively seeking to attract global investments in the EV (electric vehicle) sector and bolster their respective EV industries.
Unleashing Elon Musk’s Perspective
India has remarkable potential, according to Elon Musk, surpassing that of any other major country across the world. If Tesla decides to establish a presence in India, then it would align with the trend of the companies such as Apple, diversifying their manufacturing away from China because of the geopolitical and supply chain issues.
Musk declared his admiration for Modi by stating “I am a fan of Modi.” He further expressed his utmost satisfaction with the meeting he had with the PM, describing it as “fantastic.” Musk has also mentioned that PM Modi extended an invitation for him to visit India, which he is planning to do next year.
The Tesla CEO also emphasized that India possess immense prospects to attain a sustainable energy future based in three fundamental pillars, namely energy storage through batteries, solar and wind power generation and the adoption of electric vehicles. These align with the vision and goals of Modi.
Musk also stated that exceeding their current efforts and going against the local laws of the country might result in obstruction and the potential arrest of their personnel.
