Russia has charged 3.5 million roubles ($46,000) from the U.S. Tech Giant’ Google.‘Â
On Thursday, the Moscow court said that it had fined Google because it has failed to delete or not remove the access for the contents, which are considered illegal in Russia. Russia has charged 3.5 million roubles ($46,000) for it. This is the latest of Russia’s many fines for the U.S. Tech Giant, Google.Â
Google did not immediately give a response to a request for commenting on the same.Â
Russia Charged Google and Meta (FB. O) last yearÂ
Russia increased the ante last year because it was putting efforts to increase the pressure on this technology giant of the United States. It has handed massive and revenue-based fines to Google and Meta (earlier known as Facebook) (FB. O)
because it has repeatedly and continuously failed to remove the content that Moscow deems illegal.
At that time, the Moscow court fined Alphabet’s Google (Google. O) $98 million, i.e7.2 billion roubles, because it repeatedly failed to delete the contents, deemed illegal by Russia. It was the first revenue-based fine of its kind. Moscow increased pressure on Google in a campaign that critics characterized as an attempt by the authorities of Russia to exert control over the Internet. They say something that threatens individuals and corporate freedom.
Google mailed that before coming to a particular decision, it would first study the court ruling. Then, the Meta Platforms were fined by Google. The fine was about 2 billion roubles which are $27.15 million on the same ground. Roskkomnadzor, Russia’s communication watchdog, said that Meta and Instagram have still failed to remove two thousand pieces that violate Russia’s laws. In contrast, Google has kept 2,600 pieces of illegal and banned content.
Russia has imposed too many fines on foreign tech companies.
Throughout the year 2021 and now in 2022, Russia is continuously imposing small fines on foreign technology companies. Reuters calculations show that Google’s fine equates to just over 8%. It did not specify the percentages.
A sanctioned Russian businessman claimed victory over Google in a court case to hit the tech giant another heavy fine. Google has spent more than 32 million roubles in fines over content violations in 2022, and it is at odds with Moscow on several issues. Russia has demanded it restore access to state-backed broadcaster RT’s German-language channels.
Russia fined for these illegal activities
Russia has ordered those foreign companies to delete posts that promote illegal activities like drug abuse and dangerous pastimes, information about explosives and homemade weapons, and ones by groups it designates as extremist or terrorist.
Moscow demanded last year that 13 foreign and mostly U.S. technology companies, including Google and Meta Platforms, be officially represented on Russian soil by Jan. 1 or face possible restrictions or outright bans.
($1 = 73.3613 roubles)
And it’s February now, but the controversy is still in the news and not ending at all.
