West Indies cricket team announced their 13-player squad for the first Test match against India, set to begin on July 12 in Dominica. The team selection includes some surprises, with two uncapped batters earning their spots and a spinner making a potential comeback after a two-year absence.
Youngster Included in the Squad
Left-hand batsman Kirk McKenzie has been called up to the squad based on his impressive performances for West Indies A during their recent series against Bangladesh A. Another left-handed batter, Alick Athanaze, is also in contention to make his Test debut after being included in the squad. Chief selector Desmond Haynes expressed confidence in the young pair, stating that they demonstrated excellent batting skills and maturity during the ‘A’ team tour of Bangladesh.
Rahkeem Cornwall Return
The inclusion of Rahkeem Cornwall in the squad came as a surprise. If selected, this will be Cornwall’s 10th Test appearance and his first since November 2021. His selection is attributed to the absence of the first-choice spinner, Gudakesh Motie, who is currently injured. Left-arm spinner Jomel Warrican has also been included in the squad, providing additional options in the spin bowling department.
Building for the Future
Injury concerns led to the exclusion of young pacer Jayden Seales and experienced all-rounder Kyle Mayers from the squad. Kraigg Brathwaite has been named as the captain once again, with the team focused on starting the new World Test Championship cycle on a positive note. The West Indies recently eliminated for the World Cup 2024, but selector Desmond Haynes emphasized the importance of moving forward and striving for improvement in the Test arena.
India Will be Big Challenge for West Indies
The upcoming Test series against India marks the beginning of the new cycle of the ICC World Test Championship 2024-25. The West Indies are aware of the challenges that lie ahead and are determined to build, improve, and climb up the rankings. The first Test will take place at Windsor Park in Dominica on July 12, followed by the second Test at Queen’s Park Oval in Trinidad on July 20.
