NIOS is promoting 103 skill courses for kids to choose from. It will help school dropouts and specially-abled students.
The National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) organizes one hundred three courses based on skill development. The skill courses are curated for secondary and senior secondary students, and their main focus is on specially-disabled students.
These courses will also be accessed by girl dropouts from Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya’s (KGBV) in Gujarat and Rajasthan. The chairman of NIOS, Saroj Sharma, said that the skill courses include courses on Cookery, IT Sector, Horticulture, Carpentry, Agriculture, Secretarial practices, Engineering, Home Science, Paramedical and Health, Beauty, Cutting, Tailoring, etc.
Students can choose any course from the diverse list based on their interests. He further said that these courses are a part of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, and students can take any skilled course along with the mandatory academic course.
Since the lines between vocational courses and conventional courses are blurred, students studying Science can take up Cookery as their skill course. The girls who dropped out from KGBVs are taking up above mentioned courses along with the conventional subjects such as English, Math’s, Social Studies, Science, etc.
The NIOS chairman said that these courses come with self-instructional material, manuals, TV and radio programmes. Students can access video programmes on the PM e-Vidya channel. Students can acquire practical skills regarding their practical oriented course by going to the center’s.
