Cities Under Strikes: Russia has launched a “military operation” in Ukraine, with President Vladimir Putin urging Ukraine’s military to “lay down its arms.” Shortly after Mr Putin’s declaration, explosions were reported in Ukraine’s capital.Â
Mr Putin stated that the decision to launch a military action was made in order to protect rebels in eastern Ukraine.
The unexpected announcement was made on television just before 6 a.m. today. He also said that he would execute a “special military operation” in Donbass and cautioned against foreign intervention.
AFP claimed that powerful explosions were heard shortly after the announcement in Ukraine’s capital Kyiv and the eastern port city of Mariupol.
The statement came just hours before the UN Security Council held an extraordinary emergency session. Mr. Putin called the summit after the breakaway regions of Ukraine declared their independence.
Maxar Technologies, which has been tracking Russian soldiers for weeks, revealed considerable Russian forces near Ukraine’s border on Wednesday.
Mr. Putin has recognised their independence and signed friendship treaties with Ukraine’s breakaway regions of Donetsk and Lugansk, drawing harsh criticism from the United States and its allies.
