·      Russia-Ukraine Crises: In Russian attack 40 soldiers & 10 civilians dead
As per a Reuters report quoted by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy‘s advisor, 40 Ukrainian soldiers and around ten civilians have been killed by Russian shelling. The AFP, meanwhile, reported that Ukraine said it killed ‘around 50 Russian occupiers’ without providing details.
The mortalities were the newest in a series of fast-paced developments when Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a military operation in Ukraine early Thursday. President Putin cast aside international condemnation and sanctions, warning other countries that any attempt to interfere would lead to “consequences you have never seen.”
In Kyiv, Kharkiv, and Odesa, Big explosions were heard before dawn as world leaders decried the start of a Russian invasion that could cause massive casualties and topple Ukraine’s democratically elected government.
US President Joe Biden pledged new sanctions meant to punish Russia for an act of aggression. A few weeks ago, the international community had anticipated but could not prevent through diplomacy.
President Putin justified it all in a televised address, asserting the attack was needed to protect civilians in eastern Ukraine – a false profess the US had predicted he would make as a pretext for an invasion. He cited the US and its allies for ignoring Russia’s demand to head off Ukraine from joining NATO and offer Moscow security guarantees.
On Thursday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said that Russia had severed diplomatic relations. Later Moscow launched an all-out invasion of Ukraine by land, air, and sea. The most significant attack by one state against another in Europe since World War Two and confirmation of the worst fears of the West.
Zelenskiy has declared martial law in the country, and the Ukrainian foreign minister vowed to fight and defeat Russia.
At the same time, Ukraine’s ambassador to India urged PM Narendra Modi to contact Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr to mediate the crisis.
