IMD issued a ‘red alert’ for Thane, Raigad, Pune and Palghar districts on Thursday as heavy rain is expected. Therefore, rains are expected to continue in parts of Maharashtra on Friday. Apart from that, Mumbai and Ratnagiri districts also received an “orange alert”. Therefore, authorities in Palghar and Thane have declared school holidays on Friday and Saturday.

Rescue Operations, Launched by the Government
As a result of the issue of red alert in the four districts of Maharashtra, the government authorities were initiated to declare a holiday for schools. Meanwhile, they have made proper arrangements and positioned the NDRF and SDRF teams across the state and coastal lines of the state. Around six NDRF teams have been allotted and positioned to deal with the heavy rain in the four districts, Thane, Palghar, Raigad and Pune.
Landfall due to heavy rain
Heavy rain in Maharashtra caused landfall in the Ishlawati village of Raigad on Wednesday night. According to the ANI news agency, 98 people have been rescued so far. NDRF teams are expected to continue rescue operations from the landslides where more people are believed to be still trapped under loose soil.
Also, the National Disaster Relief Force (SDRF) team is based in Gachiroli and Southern Germany. According to PTI, this is the biggest earthquake in Maharashtra since 30 July 2014 in Ambegaon Tehsil Malin village in Pune district.Â

All schools and colleges in Thane and Pargarh districts will be closed today due to heavy rain warnings, authorities in some districts warned on Thursday. The order to close the school was given by Pargar collector Govind Bodke and Thana collector Ashok Shininre. Thana residents were also asked to stay at home due to heavy rains in the area. Also, schools in Pune hills like Ambegaon, Khed, Junnar, Bhor, Purandar, Mulshi and Maval talukas were closed due to the weather.

The weather situation is expected to improve in the upcoming days in Mumbai, Thane and Palghar. The city received an average of 27.50.mm rainfall in the last 24 hours, as recorded on 8 am Friday, said Mumbai’s civic authority Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation.

Prime Minister Eknath Shinde visited the area and briefed the rescue team involved in the operation. He also announced that the families of the deceased would receive Rs.5 lakh each and the government would cover the medical expenses of the injured.Â

The Vaishishti and Jagbudi rivers in Ratnagiri and the Kundalika, Amba, Savitri and Patalganga rivers in Raigad all flow above the distress line. The Panchaganga River in Kolhapur is also close to the flood line, officials said. Authorities also issued warnings to villages close to the coast due to flooding.Â

As a result of heavy rainfall in Mumbai for the past few days, over 100 local trains have been cancelled and the city is facing extensive traffic jams. Heavy rains occurred in many parts of the city and some low-lying areas in Andheri, Korla, Chinbul and other areas flooded. An official said more than 12 roads were diverted due to flooding in Sion this afternoon. Also, the Andheri metro was closed due to water ingress, causing major problems for drivers and pedestrians.
