The Municipal Commissioner and Administrator Dr. Iqbal Singh Chahal have declared a holiday for all Government, Municipal, and Private, Secondary and Higher Secondary Schools and all Colleges in Mumbai City and Suburbs on 27th July 2024.
Mumbai set a New Record for the Wettest July amid Heavy Rain on Wednesday
On 26th July, Mumbai received heavy rainfall between 3 pm to 4 pm, while Western Suburbs received heavy rain between 7 pm and 8 pm. The Colaba Observatory of IMD recorded 124.8 mm while the Santacruz Observatory recorded 124 mm.
Heavy Rain in Mumbai set a new record for the wettest July in the city on Wednesday. Earlier, the record was 1,502.6 mm of rain in July 2020. The new record is 1,557.8 mm of rain in July 0f 2024.
The two crucial lakes out of seven that supply water to Mumbai, Vihar and Tansa overflowed on Tuesday. The smallest lake among the seven, Tulsi Lake overflowed too leading to 59% of water stock.
Major Events occurred due to Heavy Rain
Amid heavy rainfall, the Pune-Mumbai Expressway was shut down for two hours today for damage control of a landslide near the Adoshi Tunnel a few days ago. On the 23rd of July, a landslide was reported in Raigarh district (Adoshi). Expressway was closed between 12 pm to 2 pm today.
Mumbai has recorded its wettest July since 1991 as rain has surpassed its previous record of 1502 mm in 2020. Meanwhile, Mumbai recorded rainfall of around 1550 mm on Wednesday making it the wettest July.
The Landslide in Maharashtra in Raigarh district Claimed the life of around five people on the 21st of July, Friday. The total count of death due to Landslides has increased to 21 now. The rescue team have been facing issue with eviction and protection of victims of landslides because of hilly terrain areas and continuous rain.
The commuters travelling by train claimed that trains were running late about 10-15 mins late on western and central lines. The officials of the weather bureau have predicted heavy rainfall in the next 24 hours in the city with the possibility of heavy winds with the speed of 45-55 kmph.
IMD Predicted Heavy Rainfall and issued Alerts In these States
Along with Mumbai, IMD (India Meteorological Department) has predicted heavy rainfall and has issued an Orange alert in the states of Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh along with Haryana and Uttar Pradesh in the next 24 hours.
IMD also mentioned Ghats of Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra have the possibility of Heavy rainfall for the next 3-4 days. Red alerts have been issued for districts such as Satara, Ratnagiri, Pune, Chandrapur and Gadchiroli.
Southern India which includes states such as Karnataka, Telangana, and Andhra Pradesh can witness heavy rainfall for the next two days, stated IMD. Majorly, the coastal region in Kannada, Udupi, and Uttar Kannada districts expected heavy rainfall for the next 24 hours.
Eastern Indian states such as Meghalaya, Assam, and Arunachal Pradesh are continued to expect heavy rainfall on the 28th of July. However, In Delhi NCR, IMD has predicted light to moderate rainfall along with thundershowers for the next three days. The department has predicted a cloudy sky with light rainfall over Ghaziabad, Noida, Gurugram, and Faridabad.
