In a recent conversation, China’s top diplomat, Wang Yi, conveyed to his Russian counterpart, Sergei Lavrov, that China maintains a stance of impartiality concerning the conflict in Ukraine.
This communication occurred shortly after a Chinese delegation participated in international discussions aimed at resolving the conflict, which notably included representatives from Kyiv but not Moscow.
During the call on Monday, Wang emphasized the strong bond of trust and reliability that exists between China and Russia. He highlighted that in dealing with the Ukraine crisis, China’s approach is one of independence and impartiality.
Wang underscored China’s commitment to voicing a balanced and rational perspective, actively supporting peace negotiations, and striving for a political resolution within the framework of international multilateral platforms.
This call followed a two-day meeting hosted by Saudi Arabia, wherein approximately 40 nations gathered, including significant allies of Ukraine such as the United States, Britain, and Germany, along with nations like India and several Middle Eastern countries.
The purpose of the meeting was to discuss and seek solutions to the ongoing conflict, which has persisted for nearly 18 months since the commencement of Moscow’s military intervention.
The participating nations at the meeting reached a consensus on the significance of engaging in international dialogues to discover common ground that would pave the way for a peaceful resolution. This sentiment was communicated through the official Saudi media.
Sergei Lavrov expressed his appreciation and welcome for China’s constructive role in pursuing a political settlement to the “Ukraine crisis.” This sentiment was conveyed through China’s Foreign Ministry’s summary of the call held on Monday.
China’s Role in Ukraine Talks: Navigating Diplomacy
Anticipating talks in Jeddah, China’s involvement was praised by Ukraine’s Foreign Minister as a historic breakthrough. Hopes linger that China, led by President Xi Jinping, could nudge Moscow towards peace due to their amicable rapport. Despite Russia’s Ukraine invasion, China has deepened ties with Moscow and avoided criticizing the action.
China’s Eurasian Affairs envoy, Li Hui, led the delegation, working to build consensus during talks. China’s stance remains steady, emphasizing its 12-point proposal for a political settlement that encourages peace negotiations but differs from Ukraine’s approach by not insisting on Russian troop withdrawal. Critics say this could solidify Moscow’s gains.
Both Ukraine and Russia persist with conditions for direct talks, even if they are unacceptable to the other side.
China-Russia Alignment and Diplomatic Changes Discussed
During the Monday call between Wang and Lavrov, China’s proposal was a topic of discussion, and the Chinese foreign ministry’s account quoted Lavrov as “highly endorsing” it.
The conversation also highlighted their alignment on the global stage. Wang urged both sides to collaborate closely and strategically in shaping a “multi-polar world” and achieving the “democratization of international relations.” These terms reflect their shared vision of a world order with reduced Western dominance.
As per the Russian state-run news agency Tass, the official Russian record of the call affirmed the convergence of Moscow and Beijing’s approaches to global affairs. Both diplomats reiterated their opposition to the West’s confrontational policy, including sanctions and other tactics aimed at impeding their progress.
Significantly, this call marked their first communication since Wang’s reappointment as China’s foreign minister. His return followed the abrupt removal of his predecessor, Qin Gang, in July, after just six months in office, a change that occurred without explanation.
Wang had previously held the position of foreign minister for around ten years before his elevation to lead the foreign affairs division of the Chinese Communist Party late in the previous year. Presently, he holds both roles.
Lavrov conveyed his congratulations to Wang for his appointment and extended well-wishes for success in his demanding new role, according to Tass.
