Neeraj Chopra once again will be taking the center stage as he will be leading 28 contingents in the World Athletics Championship which is schedule to be held on 19 August 2024, in Budapest, Hungary.
Neeraj is an Olympic Champion in Javelin throw. His win in Olympic has made India proud and now once again as India is all set to send 28 athletes to the championship, Neeraj will be the one to lead them.
The Sport Ministry disclosed the list of the athletes with an unexpected move. Diverging it from the usual practices where usually Athletics Federation of India (AFI) are the one who always makes such announcements.
Tajinderpal Singh Toor, Asian Champion record holder in shot put, has withdrawn his name from the world athletics championship which will be held from 19th -27th August 2024. This decision was made because he is still recovering from a groin injury, which he got in Asian Championships held in July. This decision of him not being able to play for India has come as a setback.
Tejaswin Shankar, National record holder in high jumps; K.M.Chanda 800m runner and Priyanka Goswami, 20km race walker (also a national record holder), who qualified through ranking have decided to skip the World Athletic Championship this year as they want to focus on the Asian Games which is scheduled to commence from September 23rd – October 8th in Hangzhou, China.
After winning a silver medal in 2022, in Eugene, USA. The Reigning Diamond League Champion Neeraj Chopra, is seeking a gold medal in Budapest, Hungary.
Radhakrishnan Nair, the Chief Coach, said “Majority of our athletes have already reached Budapest, Hungary to get adapted to the local weather conditions.” Athletes such as, triple jumper Praveen Chithravel, long jumpers M. Sreeshankar and Jewson Aldrin, Steeplechaser Avinash Sable are some of the other leading names from Indian Squad.
Shaili Singh, long jumper will be leaving for Budapest this weekend, while D.P.Manu and Kishore Jena, Javelin thrower are expected to join the Indian team next week in Budapest.
