In a significant development, Taiwan’s defense ministry confirmed on Sunday (August 20) that over the past 24 hours, a total of 25 Chinese air force planes from China made a breach across the Taiwan Strait’s median line.
This median line had historically acted as an informal yet respected boundary between the two sides. The incursion included Su-30 and J-11 fighter jets, as depicted on a ministry-issued map. Notably, there were no immediate signs suggesting China’s continuation of these exercises into Sunday.
As reported by the reputable news agency Reuters, Taiwanese officials expressed concerns that China might soon initiate military exercises in close proximity to the island. The timing of this potential move was linked to the country’s recent display of military drills within Taiwan.
These exercises were carried out in direct response to Vice President William Lai’s recent visit to the United States. The Xinhua news agency’s report clarified that these drills were strategically designed to evaluate the People’s Liberation Army’s (PLA) competence in gaining control over both air and sea spaces, especially in conditions that closely simulate actual combat scenarios.
In response to these military activities, Taiwan strongly denounced the exercises, and, in a firm statement, pledged to deploy “appropriate forces” to respond with practical actions.
This resolute stance underscores Taiwan’s commitment to safeguarding its sovereignty and security amid the escalating tensions in the region.
China doesn’t determine the poll’s outcome, says Lai
Speaking in an interview aired on Saturday, Taiwanese Vice President Lai highlighted that the upcoming election in the island nation would be a choice between democracy and autocracy. He emphasized that China doesn’t hold the authority to determine the election outcome.
The interview, conducted while Lai was in the US, addressed the issue of China’s involvement in Taiwan’s democratic process. Lai stated, “China’s preferences shouldn’t dictate leadership. This contradicts the essence of our democracy and undermines its foundation.”
Lai also discussed the matter of overseas travel by Taiwanese leaders, suggesting that China’s reaction was disproportionate.
He firmly asserted that Taiwan is not a constituent part of the People’s Republic of China and expressed willingness to engage with the international community and hold discussions with China, provided that security is ensured.
China’s Military Exercises Stir Taiwan Election Concerns
China asserts that Taiwan is an integral part of its territory and has vowed to reclaim it, employing force if necessary. In response to various triggers, such as high-profile visits by US officials and Taiwan’s leaders transiting through the US, the nation initiated substantial military drills last year.
Nonetheless, Sifu Ou from Taiwan’s Institute for National Defense and Security Research predicted that this time the People’s Liberation Army’s (PLA) exercises would likely be on a more moderate scale. Ou explained that these exercises intend to apply pressure on Taiwan, without inadvertently aiding William Lai, who is a key political figure.
Joseph Wu, Taiwan’s Foreign Minister, accused China of attempting to meddle in the upcoming presidential elections set for January. He highlighted the nation’s ambition to shape Taiwan’s political landscape but emphasized that the ultimate decision rests with Taiwan’s citizens.
Historically, China’s military exercises during election years were perceived as benefiting candidates affiliated with the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), led by figures like William Lai, who are known for their pro-US stance.
US Calls on China: Halt Pressure on Taiwan and Pursue Dialogue
In the midst of this, on Saturday, the US called upon China to halt its pressure on Taiwan and initiate a constructive dialogue with the island nation. A spokesperson from the US State Department stated to Reuters,
“We encourage Beijing to discontinue its military, diplomatic, and economic pressures on Taiwan, and instead, open substantial dialogues with them.” The spokesperson affirmed that the US would maintain vigilant oversight of the ongoing exercises.
