Tragedy Strikes Aizawl, Mizoram as Railway Bridge Collapse Claims 17 Lives
AIZAWL, MIZORAM – In a heart-wrenching incident that sent shockwaves through the serene district of Aizawl, Mizoram, a devastating collapse of a railway bridge resulted in the loss of 17 lives. The incident unfolded on a fateful Wednesday morning when a railway bridge under construction gave way, marking a dark day in the community’s history.
Around 10 AM, just 21 miles away from Aizawl, tragedy struck at the construction site as the bridge collapsed, claiming the lives of 17 dedicated employees who were diligently working on the project. Initial police reports indicated that approximately 35–40 personnel were present during the mishap. Prompt rescue operations were launched, resulting in the successful rescue of 17 individuals from the debris. However, the painstaking efforts of the rescue teams continue as they persist in searching for potential survivors.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to social media to express his profound sorrow, stating, “Pained by the Mizoram bridge accident, those who have lost loved ones deserve our condolences. May those who were hurt quickly heal. All available help is being provided to those in need, and rescue efforts are in progress.” In a display of solidarity, the Prime Minister’s Office disclosed that Rs. 2 lakhs from the Prime Minister’s Relief Fund (PMNRF) would be extended to the next of kin of each deceased, offering financial support during these difficult times. Furthermore, Rs. 50,000 would be provided to those injured in the tragedy to aid in their recovery.
Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga also expressed deep sadness, thanking all individuals who contributed to the ongoing rescue efforts. The incident highlights the fragility of life and emphasizes the need for rigorous safety measures in construction projects.
