Team India captain Mithali Raj surpasses Belinda Clark to play most matches as Captain in World Cup.
Indian skipper Mithali Raj achieves another milestone in history of world cricket as she broke the all-time captaincy record by playing most matches in ICC Women’s World Cup during India vs West Indies match at Seddon Park in Hamilton on Saturday morning.
The 39-year-old is playing her 24th match as captain of India, surpassed the former Australia skipper Belinda Clark who held the record of 23 matches as captain. Raj now claims 15 wins, 8 losses and one no result.
Raj had completed 150 ODIs leading the side as captain during the match against New Zealand in the season tournament on Thursday. Raj and Clark are the only two women cricketers to have led their country in more than two World Cups.
Last Sunday, Raj made another remarkable record as she became the third cricketer and first woman to appear in six World Cups alongside Master Blaster-Sachin Tendulkar and Pakistan’s great spunk Javed Miandad.
With this, Raj tops another chart as the leading Indian cricketer to play most matches as Indian captain, followed by former men’s team captains Mohammad Azharuddin with 23 matches and M.S. Dhoni with 17 matches.
The Indian Duo storms at Windies Women
Whilst skipper scored 5 off 11 this morning, fans were hoping for a captain’s knock on her 24th match leading the side as captain. Nonetheless, the partnership between Smriti Mandhana and Harmanpreet Kaur helped India in targeting a total of 317 runs in 50 overs.
The fiery opener Mandhana, smashed a blistering knock of 123 runs in 119 balls. However, the vice-captain of women in blue, Harmanpreet complemented her in smashing a quick 109 off 107.
The Indian duo scored their first century in the season’s tournament against powerful Windies which led to India on winning side by a huge margin of 155 runs. This match will be a memorable day not only for skipper Mithali Raj, but also for cricket fans and India cricket.
