Kanye West, who legally changed his name to Ye in 2021, has been dropped from the lineup of performers at the 2022 Grammy Awards, according to sources from Variety and The Hollywood Reporter.
The ban was announced on March 18, just two weeks before the awards show, which is set to take place in Las Vegas. On Saturday, a spokeswoman for Ye told Variety that the rapper’s camp had gotten a call from the Academy alerting them that Ye had been dropped.
Ye’s crew was told of his performance cancellation, according to The Blast. The Grammy Awards organizers made the decision ” due to what they deem to be concerning behavior” and comedian Trevor Noah’s role as ceremony presenter, according to sources.
On March 19, representatives from Ye’s management told Variety and The Hollywood Reporter that his performance had been cancelled owing to his “concerning online behaviour.”
Ye’s Instagram account was recently suspended for 24 hours due to the online behaviour in issue. After the rapper posted a message criticizing Trevor Noah in the description, Ye’s account was restricted on March 16 for breaching Instagram’s hate speech, bullying, and harassment policies, the post, along with other information on Ye’s page, was erased by Meta after his suspension.
After ‘The Daily Show’ host spoke out against Ye’s public treatment of his former partner Kim Kardashian, stating that Ye is “harassing” Kim and labelling the situation “terrifying to watch,” Ye appears to have begun an internet battle with Noah.
“I said counsel Kanye not cancel Kanye,” Noah said on Twitter after being chastised by Ye for publicizing the ongoing rivalry between West, Kardashian, and her boyfriend, Pete Davidson.
Furthermore, a campaign to remove West from the Coachella Festival lineup in 2022 is gaining traction. On Change.org, more than 8,000 individuals have signed the “Remove Kanye from Coachella!” petition.
According to The Blast’s first report, Grammy organizers were concerned about how Noah and Ye would interact during the awards show, according to individuals close to Ye. Many people were concerned about his online conduct, Ye’s targeted posts about Kim and her new partner Pete Davidson drew considerable condemnation.
Despite the criticism, Ye has received support from fans and industry friends. On March 19, fellow rapper and Ye collaborator, ‘The Game’ defended Ye on Instagram, addressing the issue and speculating on what prompted Ye’s removal from the Grammys performer list.
According to Variety, he may use the platform to continue his online harassment of Pete Davidson, his estranged wife Kim Kardashian’s new boyfriend, his feelings about child custody, and other reasons were mentioned. Furthermore, the performer can use such a large platform for something other than self-serving, self-referential, or pure trolling.
On Sunday, April 3 (4th April, 5.30am IST) , CBS will broadcast the 64th Annual Grammy Awards, hosted by Trevor Noah. He is up for Producer of the Year for his work on Lil Nas X’s debut album, ‘Montero.’ Kanye West’s 10th studio album, ‘Donda,’ has received four Grammy nominations. The Grammy 2022 will happen with the performances of Olivia Rodrigo, Lil Nas X, BTS, Billie Eilish and many more.
