Landfill of Ghazipur ablaze for more than thirty hours since Monday, fire tenders were deployed to organize the cool down operation
The dumping yard landfill of Ghazipur, East Delhi, was reported ablaze with fire on Monday, 28th March 2022. The call for the same was received at 2:30 pm on the same day. The Ghazipur police registered an FIR against unknown persons. The FIR was lodged on Tuesday, 29th March 2022. The officials immediately attended to the fire. Fire tenders were deployed in the area to extinguish the fire.
The officials reported that there were no casualties recorded. The Ghazipur landfill fire of Monday, 28th March 2022 was brought to notice around 2:30 pm. The fire persisted for more than 30 hours.
The police lodged an FIR related to the incident with a thorough investigation in place. “An FIR has been registered under sections 278 (making atmosphere noxious to health), 285 (negligent conduct concerning fire or combustible matter) and 336 (act endangering life or personal safety of others) of the Indian Penal Code against unknown people.” Deputy Commissioner of Police (East) Priyanka Kashyap said in a statement to the reporters. The case was lodged against unidentified individuals.
The PTI received input from Atul Garg, Chief Fire Officer that the fire extinguishing process had started. Although, he added that the cooling process will take additional time. Four fire tenders had been deployed at the venue of the incident.
Beer Singh Panwar, chairman of the standing committee of East Delhi Municipal Corporation claimed that the reason for the fire was high temperatures. He mentioned that due to the high prevalence of plastic components in the waste, methane production keeps increasing. Furthermore, 22 bulldozers were contributed by the EDMC to aid the situation.
The regions of Bhalswa and Tughlakabad had similarly seen two fires each. Additionally, 15 incidents took place in 2022. In 2019, 37 fire incidents were reported, according to the official reports.
These incidents were associated with a “lack of vigilance and measures taken”, according to EDMC. The Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) was asked by Gopal Rai, Environment Minister of Delhi to submit a report. The submission was decided to be made within 24 hours.
