Qasim Khan Suri, the Deputy Speaker of the Pakistan National Assembly, on Sunday denied the no-confidence resolution against beleaguered Prime Minister Imran Khan, claiming that it violated Article 5 of the country’s constitution.
Imran Khan was a former cricketer and is the current prime minister of Pakistan. Deputy Speaker Qasim Khan Suri presided over the important session after the filing of a no-confidence resolution against Speaker Asad Qaiser by opposition groups.
As they made their way to Parliament House, members of the opposition, who had earlier expressed confidence in the outcome of the no-trust motion, demonstrated their displeasure with the decision.
Following the rejection of the no-confidence vote, Prime Minister Imran Khan said that he has requested President Arif Alvi to dissolve the National Assembly and call for new elections in Pakistan.
Khan, who came to power in 2018 on the promise of establishing a “Naya Pakistan,” is at a crossroads in his political career since he has lost the majority of the country’s seats in parliament after a defection from his Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party.
Two of his associated political groups also dropped their support and joined the ranks of the resurgent opposition movement.
