The Lucknow Super Giants won their second consecutive IPL 2022 match on Monday, defeating Sunrisers Hyderabad by 12 runs at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai. On Saturday, LSG defeated the Chennai Super Kings, the defending champs.
Sunrisers Hyderabad got off to a terrific start with Nicholas Pooran and Washington Sundar in the middle, but LSG pulled back into the game in the 18th over when Avesh Khan struck twice. LSG were struggling at 27 for 3 in their fifth over after being called to bat. It was an incredible comeback victory.
Kane Williamson, the Sunrisers Hyderabad captain, had won the toss and elected to field. The Lucknow Super Giants were reduced to 27 for 3 in the fifth over of the innings, putting them in difficulties. KL Rahul and Deepak Hooda, on the other hand, both scored half-centuries and contributed 87 for the fifth wicket to enable LSG reach a difficult total.
LSG skipper KL Rahul praised their middle-order after they lost their first match to Gujarat Titans. It was obvious when Deepak Hooda smashed 51 off 33 balls and Ayush Badoni smashed 19 off 12 balls to enable the side finish with 169 for 7 off their overs. With 68 off 50 balls, Rahul set the bar high.
Sunrisers Hyderabad got off to a horrible start when skipper Kane Williamson was removed in the opening over by Avesh Khan. For quite some time, SRH has experienced problems with their team. The David Warner issue rocked the team last year. SRH are no better in 2022, having dropped the likes of Warner and Rashid Khan, while Williamson has only looked a pale shell of his former self with the bat.
Avesh Khan inflicted more damage with a stunning catch by Manish Pandey in his second over, removing Abhishek Sharma. Avesh came close to catching Rahul Tripathi at gully, but it was a difficult opportunity and a diving catch. Deepak Hooda performed an excellent job securing the ball.
Earlier in the evening, LSG skipper KL Rahul led the attack for his team; later that night, his namesake Rahul Tripathi led a strong reaction for SRH after Avesh Khan damaged the top-order with two fast wickets. He was aggressive and took advantage of a missed opportunity to keep the Sunrisers in contention for 170 points.
Aiden Markram was bowled by Krunal Pandya, putting SRH back in the game, before Nicholas Pooran joined Tripathi in the middle.
Sunrisers Hyderabad’s woes were compounded when Tripathi was dismissed by Krunal Pandya. With Nicholas Pooran and Washington Sundar at the crease, the asking rate skyrocketed. Even as Jason Holder and Andrew Tye leaked runs in a mediocre chase, KL Rahul marshalled his resources wisely. Krunal Pandya’s session ended with figures of 2 for 27 to send SRH into a tailspin.
Washington Sundar struck twice in his first two overs, dismissing Quinton de Kock and Evin Lewis of the Lucknow Super Giants, shortly after Sunrisers Hyderabad skipper Kane Williamson won the toss and opted to bat. LSG suffered a top-order collapse against Gujarat Titans in their first IPL 2022 match before bouncing back against defending champions Chennai Super Kings.
As LSG chased down a large total against CSK, KL Rahul and de Kock combined 99 for the first wicket. The IPL newcomers were in a pickle on Monday when Manish Pandey was dismissed by Romario Shepherd after Washington Sundar had caught two of their most dangerous batsmen.
With a record of 27-3, the Lucknow Super Giants required a brave collaboration to get them out of trouble. Deepak Hooda entered the fray, unfazed by the occasion or the bowling onslaught. Hooda, who made his debut for India earlier this year and was full of confidence, was particularly hard on Umran Malik. KL Rahul, as he had done for Punjab Kings in previous seasons, dropped anchor.
While Rahul preferred to stay in the background, Hooda confronted the SRH bowling attack head-on, scoring a brilliant half-century. Shepherd eventually dismissed him for 51 runs off 33 balls, but not before he had added 87 crucial runs with his captain KL Rahul.
After Hooda fell, Rahul rushed to his first half-century for LSG, becoming the fifth Indian to score 50 fifties in T20 cricket, joining Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan, and Suresh Raina.
T Natarajan dismissed Rahul for a 50-ball 68, ending his stint at the crease. The dangerous Krunal Pandya was next despatched by the SRH left-arm pacer, bringing Jason Holder and Ayush Badoni to the crease.
