The Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) won another match consecutively in the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022. The Giants defeated the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) by 12 runs at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai on Monday.
Skipper KL Rahul contributed 50s along with Deepak Hooda who guided the Super Giants to a competitive total of 169 runs at 7 wickets. Avesh Khan also played wonderfully and managed to give out a 4-wicket haul so that the LSG bowling attack restrict SRH to 157 runs at 9 wickets.
SRH had to chase the score. Chasing 170 runs, the Sunrisers had Kane Williamson in the initial batting order but Williamson got out rather quickly. After hammering a 4 and a 6 each, the SRH skipper was caught in the 4th over at short fine leg, bowled by Avesh Khan.
Avesh earned his 2nd wicket inside the powerplay. His sky-scraping ball was caught by Manish Pandey to dismiss Abhishek Sharma. At this point SRH’s score was 40-2 at the end of the powerplay. Rahul Tripathi and Aiden Markram joined together to create a partnership that hit 3 boundaries.
Bowled by Andrew Tyler, three boundaries were scored in the 8th over, who gave away 15 runs in his second over of the match. Tripathi capitalized and stormed to 33 runs off 18 balls. Now, SRH were 82 runs off 2 wickets at the end of the 10th over. The very next delivery was the last ball of Aiden Markram as he got caught at extra-cover and Krunal Pandya claimed his 1st wicket.
Pandya added another wicket to his tally after Tripathi’s valuable knock came to an end and the right-handed batter was caught in the deep for 44 runs. Nicholas Pooran, a hopeful name in SRH’s team, kept the team cross-fingered as the left-handed explosive batter smashed 3 fours and a six with Washington Sundar keeping his back at the other end.
With 33 runs required off the final three, Pooran hit a maximum. Then Avesh Khan hit the stumps twice in consecutive deliveries to dismiss both Pooran and Abdul Samad. SRH scored 10 runs in the second last over and required 16 runs off the final 6 balls. Jason Holder bowled the final over with perfection by claiming 3 wickets! SRH was 13 runs behind.
SRH with the Deliveries
SRH made a commendable start with the ball as they claimed 3 wickets in the first 5 overs of the match. While Evin Lewis was trapped in front, Quinton de Kock and Manish Pandey were caught inside the circle. Washington Sundar also claimed 2 wickets while Romario Shepherd picked 1.
The Super Giants were at 32 runs off 3 wickets at the end of 6th overs when skipper KL Rahul and Deepak Hooda formed a partnership that fled the trouble away. Their partnership was crucial adding 20 runs off Umran Malik, taking SRH to 68-3 at the end of half the innings.
LSG recovered well after a shaky start and was going strong as the 50 partnership was up and running between Hooda and Rahul, ensuring the boundaries. Both Hooda and skipper Rahul reached their respective 50 runs but SRH managed to bring an end to the dangerous partnership after Hooda holed out in the deep, off Shepherd’s bowling.
With four overs to go, Washington Sundar gave away 17 runs in the 17th over. While LSG skipper added another ground boundary and a six, new batter – Ayush Badoni also skimmed a boundary to end the over.
Rahul hit a four and a six but Natarajan’s impressive death bowling brought an end to the LSG skipper’s knock. Krunal Pandya came up next only to be dismissed soon by a Natarajan yorker. Ayush Badoni played a crucial finishing knock. He scored 3 fours at the end, with 17 runs coming from the final over of the innings.
