When faced with this great threat, “your silence is deafening,” the letter from the civil servants’ states.Ā
“Call for a halt to the politics of hatred that administrations run by [his] party are so persistently pursuing,” over a hundred former officials wrote in a letter to PM Narendra Modi on Tuesday, April 26. It goes on to say that “your silence in the face of this tremendous societal menace is deafening.”Ā
Pain and fury over the destruction of our founding fathers’ constitutional structure requires us to speak out and convey our outrage and anguish, shared the 108 former IAS, IPS, and IFS officers through a signed letter.Ā
Ā Former Delhi Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung, TKA Nair, and Shivshankar Menon signed the letter.Ā Ā
‘Perversion of the Legal and Constitutional Framework’Ā
According to the group public officials, who have organized themselves into a ‘Constitutional Conduct Group,’ the current series of sectarian events is a ‘master plot’ to prepare the groundwork for a ‘Hindu Rashtra.’Ā
“What separates the current episodes from previous communal conflagrations is that the constitutional and legal framework intended to avoid such a development is being twisted and distorted in order to transform it into an instrument of majoritarian rule. It’s unsurprising, then, that the bulldozer has evolved into the new metaphor for the exercise of political and administrative authority, both physically and metaphorically.”Ā
The use of the term ‘bulldozer’ is a reference to recent anti-encroachment campaigns in Delhi, Gujarat, and Madhya Pradesh, where communal riots erupted in April.Ā
The demolition campaigns were generally criticized as politically driven and discriminatory towards the Muslim minority group.Ā Ā
We expect that in this year of ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’ you would rise beyond partisanship and call for an end to the politics of hatred that governments ruled by your party are so actively pursuing.
