A war of tweets broke out between Bollywood actor Ajay Devgn and Kannada star Kiccha Sudeep. The spat has stirred a debate in the country on Hindi being the national language of India. Soon after a lot of politicians, celebrities, and the general public also weighed in on the discussion, with half of them supporting Ajay while the other half heavily trolling the actor for his insensitivity.
What did Ajay Devgn tweet?
Ajay Devgn chose Wednesday to be the center of attention and create chaos. Unprompted, the well-known Bollywood actor decided to fire a tweet at a fellow Kannada actor Kiccha Sudeep.
In his tweet which was written in Hindi, Ajay declared Hindi as the national language of India and justified his statement by saying that all south Indian films are dubbed in Hindi.
He also firmly proclaimed that Hindi was, is, and will always be the mother tongue and the national language of India.
Ajay tried to put the row to rest after he tweeted that his words were misconstrued and asserted that he has always thought of the film industry as one.
Sudeep replied by saying that he would have been happier if Ajay would have tweeted him for a creative reason.
The tweet was made against the backdrop of an interview given by Kiccha Sudeep where he stated that Hindi is not our national language anymore.
Sudeep had recently commented on the success of the Kannada film industry with movies like KGF Chapter 2, RRR, and Pushpa, blatantly pointing out the downfall of the Hindi film industry; more commonly known as Bollywood.
The response to the tweet
Kicha Sudeep cheekily responded to Ajay’s tweet stating that he was able to understand the text which was written in Hindi because everyone loves respect and likes to learn the language. However, he questioned the actor on whether the situation would be similar if the tables turned and he wrote a tweet in Kannada.
The reaction of the internet
With Twitter firing shots at him, the tweet has put Ajay on the receiving end of a lot of social media hate. Most users sarcastically advised Ajay to talk more in movies and less in real life while others offered him free GK lessons.
The internet fact-checked his statements pointing out the 22 languages listed in the 8th schedule of the Indian constitution.
Political Reactions
Karnataka Chief Minister backed the Kannada actor by confirming that he is absolutely correct. He pointed out the importance of language by stating it as the basis on which Indian states were divided.
Former Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah reacted to the exchange by stating that Hindi was never and will never be the national language of India.
The CM asserted that he was a proud Kannadiga and established that each language has its rich history, which its speakers should be proud of.
Kumarswamy, another of the former CM of Karnataka said ‘Just because a majority of the population speaks Hindi, it does not become a national language.
He criticized Devgn for his ludicrous behavior and called him a ‘mouthpiece of BJP’. He also blamed the Bhartiya Janta Party for sowing a seed that has now become contagious, is a threat to the unity of the nation, and is destroying the idea of an integral India.
The Congress’s state-level Chief, DK Shivkumar pointed out the existence of 20,000 languages in the country and affirmed that none should dominate the other.
