A SpiceJet flight from Mumbai to Durgapur, West Bengal, suffered significant turbulence, injuring at least one passenger during the descent. At the event, the jet was attempting to land at Durgapur’s Kazi Nazrul Islam Airport, popularly known as Andal airport.
Casualties
Ten of the 40 passengers suffered significant injuries, while the remainder were released after essential treatment. According to officials at the Andal hospital, the ten passengers’ condition is severe, but they are not in danger.
The plane was close to land when it began to wobble, and cabin bags tumbled on passengers amid heavy turbulence caused by severe weather. An investigation is ongoing to determine how the jet became stranded in a storm.
“There were three shocks upon landing,” one passenger told India Today. It felt precisely like when automobiles collide with bumpers. We were all wearing seat belts. The belts were ripped apart as a result of the contact. We jumped around in our chairs.”
According to Dr. Tapan Ray of Andal Hospital, one passenger was seriously injured and had to be transferred for spine surgery. Ray believes the overhead bin collided, injuring numerous people, including the cabin staff.
SpiceJet acknowledged in an official statement following the incident that the Boeing B737 aircraft operating flight SG-945 from Mumbai to Durgapur encountered strong turbulence during descent, resulting in injuries to a few passengers.
“Upon arriving in Durgapur, immediate medical treatment was offered,” it stated. SpiceJet regrets the mishap and is offering all medical assistance to those who have been wounded.”
It went on to say, “It was not an emergency landing because the jet was scheduled to land at Andal airport.” The problem arose due to air turbulence caused by a northwestern storm known locally as Kalbaishakhi.”
Another SpiceJet update stated that 11 passengers on the Mumbai-Durgapur flight were sent to the hospital. It also said that 8 of the 11 passengers have been released so far and that SpiceJet is assisting the injured in every way possible.
“When the flight encountered turbulence,” the airline added, “the seat belt sign was on.” The pilots and crew made many announcements telling passengers to remain seated and buckle their safety belts. Few people were injured as a result of the intense turbulence. Upon arrival, prompt medical help was provided.”
