On Monday, the Supreme Court upheld a Kerala high court ruling mandating the Lakshadweep government to put animal items, including chicken, on the menu for schoolchildren’s midday meal.Ā
The Supreme Court was hearing a petition challenging the Lakshadweep administration’s decision to shut dairy farms and exclude animal items, including chicken, off the menu of schoolchildren’s midday meal.Ā
A panel of Justices Indira Banerjee and A S Bopanna issued notice to the Union of India, the Union Territory of Lakshadweep, and others on an appeal filed against a Kerala High Court judgement dismissing public interest litigation challenging the Lakshadweep administration’s decision.Ā
According to his argument, the proposed law will prohibit the sale and purchase of beef and beef products by closing down farms, limiting the islanders’ access to milk, and coercing them into buying milk imports from Gujarat.
The administration’s decision to eliminate chicken and other meat options from the lunch menu for schoolchildren in Lakshadweep was also contested by the petitioner
“Issue a notification that is returnable in two weeks after the summer break.Ā
“In the meanwhile, the High Court’s interim order of June 22, 2021, will remain in effect,” the bench said.Ā
