Controversial PM Thatcher’s statue egged within hours of installation .Therefore, it was placed at her native place Granthan, Lincolnshire on Sunday morning without any official ceremony. It immediately faced resistance from the people. It was expected that such events may happen, fences were setup around the statue.
Due care was taken to avoid any such events, even they placed a camera near the statue but it was unavoidable as she still remains a divisive figure in the country. Her memories are still fresh in people’s minds. It was not all hate, she was receiving, some people visited and took photos around it.
As soon as there were talks of installing a statue of her in Granthan, Facebook pages came up, hundreds of people wrote, they can come for egging the statue.
On Sunday a man came with carton of eggs and started throwing them on her statue. The Telegraph reported the man was Jeremy Webster and allegedly he has been boasting about he got the first hit. The Local police have confirmed so far there have not been any arrests as they are still enquiring. They are investigating claims of criminal damage and security of statue has been increased.
The statue was sitting on a 10 ft high granite. A planning committee of Lincolnshire has decided to invest £300,000 in statue but it got postponed by Covid. Other than the statue the other sign of former PM Thatcher in her hometown, are a plaque on the corner of North Parade and Broad Street.
A spokesman has conveyed that there is going to be an official ceremony to unveil the statue. “We must never hide from our history and it is appropriate to debate that surrounds her legacy takes place in Grantham” said leader of South Kesteven District Council, Kelham Cooke.
Labour group leader at the authority, Councilor Lee Steptoe said,” She remains the most divisive PM in history, who cared little for the town she was born in or the millions who lost their jobs under her rush to deindustrialize and privatize the economy” reported the LINCOLNITE. The administration hopes that her statue will bring tourism to Grantham and it will balance the costs of protecting the statue.
Who was Margret Thatcher?
She was a strong leader. Some people see her as a PM who saved the economy from economic decline and others believe that her policies destroyed the livelihoods of poor people. She was born in 1925 and spent initial years of her life in Lincolnshire. In 1979, She became the first woman prime minister of Britain.
She came at a time when Britain’s economy was declining. She asked people to be less dependent on government. Her decisions were harsh for lower class. She increased the taxes and cut down the government aid. She was a nationalist in and out. Her bold policies earned her the title of ‘the iron lady’.
She was the first woman to reach the highest executive position in all western democracies. People doubted the capabilities of women at that stage but she proved everyone wrong. She paved the way for the women all around the world. Even though India had a lady prime minister before the Uk.
Both these women were strong leaders and they spark the strongest emotions in people, either people love them or hate them. There is no in between for them.
Damage to her statue is unfortunate. People can disagree with her policies but that doesn’t discredit the fact she was Britain’s’ PM for a long time and had also done a lot of beneficial things for the nation in her tenure. A monument should bring nuanced debates and an effort to understand the person rather than pelting.
