The G7 development ministers meet is currently underway. The G7 2022 presidency is under Germany who is leading the discussion on the range of ministerial level meetings in the G7. The G7 Agriculture ministers meet was also concluded before the G7 development ministers meet.
The development ministers meet is a two day long discussion. On the second day of the discourse, the health ministers of G7 countries will also participate in the meet where they will discuss covid-19 control and pandemic prevention. Indian representatives is also participating in G7 development ministers meet along with Indonesia, Senegal representatives and Achime steiner, Head of United nations development Programme, David Malpass, President of World Bank as a guests.
Indian prime Minister Narendra Modi will also participate in G7 summit. The summit will take place from June 26 to 28 June 2022. The German Chancellor Olaf Scholz invited the Prime Minister Modi to take part in G7 summit during Prime Minister Modi small visit to Germany last month.
Agenda of the meet
The main agenda of this meet is to announce the launch of the Alliance for Global Food Security and discuss the transition in energy from coal to renewable sources, along with investment in sustainable infrastructure, climate and environmental protection, global health and gender equality.
The Alliance for Global Food Security was proposed jointly by the German Development Minister Svenza Schultz and World Bank President David Malpass in the month of April. The main objective of alliance is to finance the food security and to closely coordinate the food security measures.
Why food security on the table
The Ukraine-Russia crisis through Europe in grave concern of food crisis and, every major platform is discussing food security because, Russia and Ukraine jointly account for around 14% of global wheat production and 29% of global export.
The German Development Minister Svenja Schultz said in opening presser “Mr. Putin is using hunger intentionally as a weapon. To counter this plan, we need to form a new alliance for global food security. We are seeking to adopt just such an alliance at this meeting.”
The G7 Countries Germany, France, Japan, UK, USA, Italy, Canada and the EU wants India to keep together with their mission of Food Security or in ‘Alliance’ as, india is second largest wheat producer in the world. However, India has banned wheat export and it has been opened window only for genuine seekers and its neighbours. That’s why the G7 and specially US have asked India to reconsider its decision.
