After a tremendous nervousness on the most unbelievable day of the season, Manchester City emerged victorious and claimed the title of Premier League champion for the fourth time in the last five years.
Manchester City started one point ahead of Liverpool and had a higher goal difference by six. They overcame a 2-0 deficit to win 3-2 at Aston Villa, but former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard did not help out his home team in the way they had hoped. However, it was not for want of trying, and former Liverpool star Philippe Coutinho also played a role, as he helped put Liverpool on the verge of glory after putting Villa 2-0 in the lead.
However, after a spirited comeback by Manchester City, Jurgen Klopp was unable to achieve his goal of winning the quadruple. First, in the 76th minute, City’s replacement Ilkay Gundogan provided a glimmer of hope. After another four minutes had passed, Rodri scored the equalizer, and Gundogan scored the winning goal amidst scenes of relief and happiness.
When Pedro Neto gave the Wolves a 1-0 lead at Anfield, the defending champions had some early good news in their attempt to defend their championship. However, their euphoria was short-lived as Sadio Mane scored for the home team shortly after Pedro Neto’s goal. Things went from bad to worse when Matty Cash startled the Etihad by putting Villa ahead, and they went from bad to worse when Coutinho scored for the visitors. Then, though, a reaction worthy of champions emerged, and City snatched victory from the jaws of defeat. Liverpool, on the other hand, came out on top with a 3-1 victory, but it was not enough.
The team coached by Pep Guardiola started the season off with a loss against Tottenham Hotspur, but they quickly bounced back to set up a 14-point lead over Liverpool in February. Klopp’s team, who had played two games less at that stage, fought back to grab the lead in the standings heading into the final week of the season. However, City has successfully defended the title they won the previous year.
It is the second time that Guardiola has led City to back-to-back championships during his tenure. There have only been two other clubs in the history of the Premier League to accomplish this accomplishment, and those teams are Manchester United and Chelsea.
They have only suffered defeat on three occasions during the whole season, and their lone defeat came away from the Etihad Stadium, where they won 14 of their 19 matches. After scoring 100 points in 2018 and 98 points in 2019, Pep Guardiola’s City squad has now surpassed the 90-point mark for the third time under Guardiola’s leadership.
Their victory prevents Liverpool from achieving the quadruple, which would have been a first. The Carabao Cup and the FA Cup have already been won by Liverpool, and on Saturday they will compete against Real Madrid in the final of the Champions League in Paris.
This season, City and Liverpool played three times, with each match ending in a 2-2 tie in the Premier League. However, Liverpool prevailed in the FA Cup semifinal match versus City by a score of 3-2.
