The Brazilian, who has been in charge of PSG since 2019, paid the price following a dismal season in which the club fell to Real Madrid in the Champions League knockout rounds in March.Ā Ā
‘Insult to football’
On Saturday, the head of Spain’s La Liga, Javier Tebas, blasted PSG’s Qatari owners for using their substantial financial resources to persuade Mbappe to stay in France.Ā
Tebas wrote, “The renewal of Kylian Mbappe by PSG is a great insult because it comes after the club has suffered losses of 700 million euros in recent seasons. Its payroll bill is over 600 million euros.”Ā
The Spanish league said it would file an official protest against PSG’s activities with UEFA, the French tax and administrative authorities, and the European Union’s decision-making bodies.Ā
Tebas also termed Khelaifi “a menace to European football” in his tweet.Ā
Khelaifi serves on the UEFA Executive Committee and heads the critical European Club Association.Ā
Mbappe will now line up alongside Neymar and Lionel Messi next season to aid PSG in their long-running pursuit of the Champions League, which they have yet to win.Ā
Real Madrid fans were perplexed when the much-hyped deal fell through.Ā
“I no longer want him to play for Real Madrid. It is not worthwhile. “AFP spoke with David Pulido, a 42-year-old Real devotee.Ā
“Mbappe contributed on both sides. He wanted to go to Madrid at first, but now he stays at PSG for the money. Sorry, but I’m no longer interested in Mbappe. He’s a fantastic athlete. I used to like him, but not any longer.”Ā
In August 2017, Mbappe joined PSG on a season-long loan from Monaco, which converted into a 180 million euro permanent transfer.Ā
He has won four Ligue 1 championships with the club in the last five seasons and a championship in the Principality.Ā
Mbappe scored in both legs of PSG’s Champions League loss to Real Madrid this season, but it was not enough to prevent PSG from losing 3-2 on aggregate.Ā
He was voted France’s player of the year for the third time in four seasons last week, except in 2020, when there was no winner due to the pandemic.Ā
He will play a significant role in France’s World Cup defence in November and December.Ā
Luis Caceres, the head of the Real Madrid fan clubs, told Spanish radio station Cadena Cope: “Without Mbappe, Real Madrid has won 13 Champions Leagues. He will not be missed.”Ā
