Physicswallah, an Edtech startup, has marked its success by becoming one of the leading unicorn startups. Alakh Pandey, a college drop out, followed his passion to teach students which finally led him to the path of success.Â
Alakh Pandey CEO and founder of Physicswallah dropped out of college to follow his passion of teaching physics. He had been teaching for a very long time to keep himself and his family afloat. Later in 2014 the head of the coaching institute where he was teaching suggested that he start a YouTube channel to increase his reach. He heeded the advice and started his own YouTube channel Physicswallah. In the beginning things were slow but later during the pandemic his subscribers increased to 2 million.Â
In an attempt to end competition, Unacademy made a huge salary offer which he very promptly declined. In 2017 Pandey quit his coaching job to focus full-time due to this, the channel picked up earning him 2 million subscribers by 2019.Â
Man with a mission to teachÂ
Unlike other channels which teach the students in English. Alakh taught Hindi and English to NEET, IITJEE students. He ensured that every student gets his attention and is given all the required knowledge to crack the exams. He himself had sleepless nights before the results were announced. He engrossed himself into the process of examination, syllabus and ensuring that all topics are covered beforehand.Â
He started the Physicswallah app in the year 2020 during the coronavirus pandemic. To have an edge over established platforms like Byju’s and Unacademy, he sold his courses way cheaper at just Rs999.Â
Slow but confident path to successÂ
Unacademy also reached out to Physicswallah teachers, but Pandey did not give up on his vision of affordable coaching as is evident from his startup’s success story today. His study platform and way of teaching is exceedingly different. He uses his sense of humour, new elements of teaching to ensure students remain engaged. His classes are based on an interactive pattern where he always keeps on implementing new tools to keep his classes different from the rest.Â
Today, Physicswallah is an edtech giant with 7 million subscribers, 1500 employees, 350 crore revenue and huge profits.Â
With its $100 million funding, Physicswallah is on a sure path to even bigger success. It will be utilising these funds for business expansion, branding, introducing courses in vernacular languages, opening more offline Centers as well.Â
