NEW DELHI: In the midst of a controversy over the alleged mistreatment of Congress employees during Wednesday’s rallies in the nation’s capital, senior party leader Shashi Tharoor posted on Twitter a video of Congress MP Jothimani alleging that she was violently attacked by the Delhi police.
“This is unconscionable in any democracy. It contradicts every Indian norm of decency to treat a female protestor in this manner, but to do it to a LokSabha representative is a new low. I oppose @DelhiPolice’s conduct and demand accountability. Please, speaker @ombirlakota act!” Representative Tharoor wrote.
In the video provided by MP Tharoor, Jothimani, a Congress representative from Karur in Tamil Nadu, alleges that Delhi police personnel tore her clothing and transported her and other women demonstrators in a bus like criminals.
Jothimani then stands and reveals her ripped kurta by turning around. In the footage, the Congressman is shown wearing only one shoe. “Yesterday, the Delhi police mercilessly beat us. They tore my clothing, took off my shoes, and dragged me like a criminal “She stated. She said that the cops refused to give them water as well.
“There are seven or eight ladies on the bus, including me. They have frequently denied our requests for water. When we attempt to get water from outside, they instruct vendors not to sell it to us “She demanded in the video for Lok Sabha speaker Om Birla to investigate the situation.
As Rahul Gandhi went before the Enforcement Directorate (ED) for the third straight day on Wednesday for interrogation in connection with a money laundering case involving the National Herald newspaper, party officials and members continued to denounce the ruling BJP’s “vendetta politics.”
Multiple members of Congress were held outside the party headquarters and the investigation agency’s office. The Congress also uploaded a video of women demonstrators being pulled and placed in buses on its official Twitter account.
Top party officials, including KC Venugopal, Bhupendra Baghel, and Randeep Surjewala, stated on Tuesday that the police also entered the party headquarters and detained workers and leaders from there. However, the Delhi police have refuted Congress’s assertions.
