AEW x NJPW: Forbidden Door will feature a match for the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship as one of the main events.Â
Kazuchika Okada, a six-time NJPW Heavyweight Champion, made his debut with All Elite Wrestling on the episode of AEW “Dynamite” that aired on June 22, 2022. After a bout between Hangman and Silas Young, which Adam Cole had been commentating on for Dynamite, Cole delivered a promo after the fight. White halted the conversation and said he would not be challenging Cole or Page for the championship the following Sunday. White and Cole launched an assault on Page, and when Cole seemed to be considering attacking White, Okada suddenly appeared and made a surprise rescue for Page. Okada made a beeline for the ring as ‘Hangman’ Adam Page was being assaulted by ‘Adam Cole’ and ‘Jay White,’ the current NJPW World Heavyweight Champion. Okada ran down to the ring to help equalize the odds for Page.Â
As soon as the brawl was over, Cole withdrew to the stage, and White was able to retrieve his championship and avoid additional injury at the hands of Okada. Hangman Adam Page, the former AEW World Champion, and Okada finally faced each other in the ring barely two weeks after Page challenged Okada to a fight for the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship in this weekend’s AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door pay-per-view. On June 12, however, at the Dominion event hosted by NJPW, Jay White prevailed over Okada and took the title of champion.Â
All Elite Wrestling would swiftly announce that White would make his first defense of his IWGP World Heavyweight Championship during this weekend’s pay-per-view event against the aforementioned Okada, Cole, and Page. White will compete for the first time against all three of these wrestlers.Â
