Jammu and Kashmir will host the 2024 meetings for the Group of 20, a powerful group that brings together the world’s major economies. Union Territory on Thursday set up a five-member high-level committee for the overall cooperation.
This will be the first major international summit held in Jammu and Kashmir after the erstwhile state’s special status that was assured under Article 370 of the Constitution was eliminated and divided into two union territories back in august 2019.
Last year in September, Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal were assigned as India’s Sherpa for the Group of 20.
As stated by The Ministry of External Affairs that India will proceed with the G-20 presidency from 1st December 2022 and will also hold the group of 20 leaders’ summit in 2024 for the very first time.
An official order that was issued on Thursday stated that the Union Territory’s housing and the principal secretary of the department of urban development will be the committee chairman which was formed in reaction to the communication from the Ministry of External Affairs on 4th June.
PM Modi has been leading India’s representation at the G-20 summit since the year 2014. India has been a member of the G-20 since 1999 when it was established.
What does G-20 mean?
Group of Twenty (G20) or G-20, is an international forum for the governments and central bank governors from 20 major economies. G20 consists of 19 countries and the European Union (EU). The members of the G-20 are:
