Israel Parliament dissolved for the fifth time in less than 4 years on Thursday.Â
The parliament passed the vote itself, leading to polls in November. Yair Lapid will be appointed as the caretaker Prime Minister of the country after midnight. He is Israel’s Foreign minister and he built the coalition government that signed out.
Lapid will take office from Naftalli Bennett, who became the shortest serving Prime Minister of the country. Lapid is to be the 14th Prime Minister of Israel.
The coalition government in Israel Parliament
Bennett government had formed a government a little more than a year ago. The coalition government had brought down the 12 year strong government of Benjamin Netanyahu in a historic move. The coalition included parties of various ideologies and also had an Arab Faction (for the first time).
There was not a single opposition vote to the proposal of dissolve. All 92 legislators voted for the proposition after the dates of the next elections and other following decisions were made.
Elections will be held on November 1st.
This dissolution brings an end to the experimented coalition government. It was formed when eight parties across Israel combined forces against Netanyahu’s regime. Previously, there was a gridlock leading to four elections in a couple of years.
Netanyahu’ corruption trial
The political crisis in Israel is directly related to the corrupt government of Netanyahu. He is currently under trial. The previous elections have been a deadlock due to the doubtfulness of Netanyahu’s eligibility to be a PM under charges of bribery. The former PM has denied all allegations.
The Israeli media have conducted polls which show that Netanyahu’s seats are on the upside. Although they did not guarantee a 61 seats majority in the 120 seat parliament.Â
Lapid will do his best to make his role as the caretaker Prime Minister a permanent one. To do so, he has also invited the US President Joe Biden.Â
Lapid is the leader of the centre left party in Israel.
