Across the Mediterranean, from Crete in the east to Morocco in the west, the majority of southern Europe is under fire. Because of the widespread wildfire in Europe, around thousands of people have died in Spain and Portugal. Since Tuesday, acres of land has burnt and the entire vegetation is bone-dry.
Rescue Efforts to contain the wildfire in Europe:
Many water bombing aircrafts and thousands of fire-fighters have been deployed to contain the raging fires. The wildfire is under control in Portugal but other regions are still struggling to control it.
In Morocco, around thirteen hundred people were asked to leave their homes from the fire-hit northern areas. Larache province has suffered the most.
The United Kingdom has closed down its schools as temperatures have soared above 40 degree Celcius. Scientists have predicted thousands of deaths every year due to heat stroke and similar reasons.
Meanwhile, mountaineers planning to camp in the Alps and scale Mont Blanc are urged to postpone their trips. There is a fear of rock falls due to “exceptional climatic conditions.” Fires have destroyed around thirty thousand hectares of land in Portugal. The situation is worse than the 2017 fires which killed around hundred people.
In France and Italy, resort towns have been evacuated. Tourists left first, closely followed by the guards and other personnel. France has placed around twenty two regional departments under orange alert. In Crete, Greek fire fighters are doing a heavy duty to curb the fire.
Dr. Lo, a climate scientist reported, “heatwaves are becoming more common and last longer” due to anthropogenic reasons. The scientists have urged the common people to reduce the burning of fossil fuels.
Dr. Lo, has pointed out that “rising temperatures are a signature of climate change.” With the increase in global temperatures, forest fires are on a rise in the whole world.
