At Monday’s parliamentary session, Subhas Sarkar, minister of state for education, said that IIT-Delhi is planning to expand its campus.
On Monday, the minister of state for education, Subhas Sarkar, told the Lok Sabha in the ongoing parliament session that the government is encouraging IIT-Delhi to expand its campus in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
He said IIT-Delhi is exploring the possibilities of making its presence for the first time in a foreign land.
Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA)
When a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) was signed between India and the UAE on February 18, this year, India’s highly regarded technical institute started preparing to declare its international presence.
There are currently 23 IITs in total, all of which are located in India.
The development occurs as IIT Madras, among other institutions, considers requests from other nations as part of its expansion plans, including Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Tanzania, according to a framework created by a committee led by the former ISRO chairwoman, Dr. K Radhakrishnan.
Also, the government of India chose IIT Delhi, which had previously expressed interest in having campuses in Saudi Arabia and Egypt, to carry out the proposal.
The decision to establish an Indian Institute of Technology in the United Arab Emirates was announced in the vision statement released jointly by the two countries in February itself.
According to additional information provided by the Education Ministry, the Department of Education and Knowledge, Abu Dhabi, or ADEK, was designated as the pertinent authority based on a request made by IIT Delhi. Two meetings were held after that.
At the first ADEK-IITD meeting, both parties gave presentations about their respective organizations and expressed a desire to further this project.
As a result, the Department of Economic Development and the Advanced Technology Research Council were asked to participate in the second ADEK-IITD meeting, where they gave presentations on the economic vision and research goals of Abu Dhabi, respectively.
IIT Delhi, the second-best engineering school in India after IIT Madras, according to the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) published by the government, also gave a presentation on the mentoring program for future IITs. IIT Ropar and IIT Jammu are mentees of IIT Delhi.
