‘Golden age of Indian sports has just begun’: PM Narendra Modi interacts with CWG 2022 Indian contingent The golden period of Indian sports is knocking on the doors, said Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday as he hailed the gutsy show of the Indian contingent which returned with 61 medals from CWG.
Modi on Saturday hosted the Indian contingent at his residence to felicitate the players here.
The Indian athletes produced a sensational show in Birmingham claiming 61 medals, including 22 gold, 13 silver, and 23 bronze.
The real assessment of this performance canโt be made with just the number of medals, our athletes neck-to-neck. There may have been a difference of 1s or 1cm but we will make that up I am confident of that, โModi said during his speech.
โIt is just a start and we are not going to just sit quietly, the golden period of Indian sports is knocking on the doorsโ.
โWe have the responsibility of making a sporting system which is the best in the world, inclusive, diverse, and dynamic. NO talent should be left out as they are all assetsโ
While India produced a dominating show in badminton, wrestling and weightlifting, the athletes also did well in athletics, judo, and lawn bowl, where they won Indiaโs first-ever medal in the Games.

โSince last time we have won medals in 4 sports, from lawn bowls to athletics, our performance has been spectacular. This performance will help increase youthโs interest in new sports. We have to improve our performance in new sportsโ
The Indian team also won a silver in Womenโs T20 cricket which was introduced at the CWG
โUnder Harmanpreetโs leadership, India has produced a fantastic performance in cricket. All players have done well but no one had the antidote to Renukaโs swing bowing. It is not a small feat to be the top wicket-taker among the greats.โ
Modi also noted that the achievements of the athletes coincided with the celebration of Indiaโs 75th independence day.
The felicitation program was attended by most of the CWG returned athletes, including the wrestlers, weightlifters, boxers, shuttlers, and table tennis players.
Modi also congratulated the chess players who competed and won medals at the Olympiad which was hosted in Chennai
“I am happy that all of you have taken time out of your schedule to come to meet me at my residence as members of the family. I, just like all other Indians, feel proud to be talking to you. I welcome you all,” PM Modi said.
Commonwealth Games
The Commonwealth Games often referred to as the Friendly Games, is a quadrennial international multi-sport event among athletes from the Commonwealth of Nations. The event was first held in 1930, and, except for 1942 and 1946 (canceled due to World War II), has successively run every four years since. The Games were called the British Empire Games from 1930 to 1950, the British Empire and Commonwealth Games from 1954 to 1966, and British Commonwealth Games from 1970 to 1974.

Athletes with a disability are included as full members of their national teams since 2002, making the Commonwealth Games the first fully inclusive international multi-sport event. In 2018, the Games became the first global multi-sport event to feature an equal number of men’s and women’s medal events and four years later they are the first global multi-sport event to have more events for women than men.
Inspired by the Inter-Empire Championships, part of the 1911 Festival of Empire, Melville Marks Robinson founded the British Empire Games which were first held in Hamilton, Canada in 1930. As time progressed, the Games evolved, adding the Commonwealth Paraplegic Games for athletes with a disability (who were barred from competing from 1974 before being fully integrated by 1990) and the Commonwealth Youth Games for athletes aged 14 to 18.
