Jammu and Kashmir are likely to get new voters in the form of almost 25 lakhs, additional non-local voters. Chief Electoral Officer of Jammu and Kashmir, Hirdesh Kumar, announced that non-local residents of Jammu and Kashmir can register their names on the voting list.
On Wednesday of August 13th, 2022, Jammu Kashmir’s Chief Electoral Officer Hridesh Kumar Singh informed about the release of the final voter lists in Jammu Kashmir. The list will be released on November 25, 2022.
Recently, there has been an increase in assembly seats in J&K and hence the voters’ list is being prepared accordingly. While informing about all the necessary details required by the inhabitants of Kashmir to do before elections, the officer also announced something new.Â
The officials of the election commission announced that now the non-locals would be also able to cast votes in J&K. All students/workers/ posted professionals can now enlist themselves in the voting list. This will lead to an inclusion of around 20 to 25 lakh new voters on the voter’s list.

The Chief Electoral Officer said, “Non-Locals residing in Jammu Kashmir for work purposes, labour or studying in Jammu Kashmir can also vote. They can also register as voters online. An employee, a student, a labourer or anyone from outside who is living ordinarily in J&K, can enlist his or her name in the voting list.”
The new rule allows people from anywhere, currently posted in J&K to elicit their voting rights.
“Likewise, those from different parts of the country who are posted here have the option that if they are posted in a peace station they can enlist themselves as voters. It does not matter how long one has been staying in Jammu Kashmir. The ERO will take the final call on whether the non-local has been residing in Jammu Kashmir or not. Those living here on rent can also vote,” Kumar said.
The only condition is that the person should cancel his/her voter registration from his/her native state to be eligible.Â
